  1. Alternative:a choice limited to one of two or more possibilities, as of things, propositions, or courses of action, the selection of which precludes any other possibility

meaning in all technicality, anything and everything is an alternative source of energy. Because everything contains energy in some form.

Nuclear energy is an alternative source of energy, because it can be used as such, its really black and white here.

why is it a good alternative? or a bad one for that matter?

    thats another question entirely.

  2. By alternate source we mean a source that is not the main source.  I think coal is our main source of energy, therefore nuclear energy is not the main source.  It is an alternate.

  3. With breeder reactors, the need for uranium to power nuclear power plants is greatly reduced.

Much of what we now consider radio-active nuclear waste can, with current technology, be reduced by refining it for use to power today's improved and safer power plants.

Nuclear energy is a future necessity as we move from fossil fuels toward other energy sources. It is IMPOSSIBLE, in any practical sense, with known technology,  to produce the electricity we need for driving our transportation and powering industry, from wind and solar power.

Finally, batteries are now technically good enough to use for short range transportation. That will improve over time and we will have to be able to charge all those batteries.

Nuclear power is the only reasonable technology to handle the future needs unless we find some other efficient method.

  4. Because during normal operation, no greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere.  The only "pollution" is a relatively small amount of waste heat present in cooling water discharged into a convenient natural stream.

By the way, there is no shortage of uranium to meet future needs.   During the precious few pre 911 months of the Bush administration, a stink erupted over the amount of uranium that municipalities could leave in treated drinking water.  The reason?  Uranium is present in small amounts in all natural sources of water, and there is more on the way as it leaches into those mountain springs that turn into rivers and lakes.

Ever hear about the radon gas hazard in basements and homes scattered around the country?  Uranium 238 decays into radon gas, so where there is radon gas, there is U 238 nearby.  The point being, uranium is everywhere, not just in mines.

  5. by alternate source of energy we mean a source that is not based on fossil fuels.

Uranium, which powers nuclear stations, is a non fossil source of energy.

  6. because it does not pollute or harm the environment in any way whatsoever. it does not let out harmful chemicals too.

  7. well it is a souse of energy that dose not release massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. the main problems are nuclear waste and damage to the environment where yellowcake  is mined. another problem is cost, if the world moved to nuculer power there would be a shortage of yellowcake and this would make nuculer power comparable with other renewable power sources such as solar.
