Give scientific reasons.?

Question

Everyday after work, Mr & Mrs Lim would walk across a field to reach home. Mrs Lim wears a pair of heels and Mr Lim wears a pair of shoes. Who will find it easier to reach the other side of the field ? Why is it so ? Give scientific principles as your reasons.

Mr.Lim will find easier because of shoes. On the other side, Mrs. Lim wears heels which makes uneasy th walk.

I don't think this is meant to be answered one way or the other, but is intended to help you to ask what it means to take a scientific approach such a question.

You can guess one way or the other, and you can even give reasons for why you think your guess is correct, but how would you actually establish this was any more than just your personal opinion?

On the other hand, you could do this empirically by looking at people as they are walking across a field in heels or shoes, and note how many of those wearing heels and how many of those wearing shoes were able to walk across the field without any problems.

Better yet of course would be to obseve Mr. & Mrs. Lim themselves as they crossed the field.

Mr Lim walks across the field easier becaus he is wearing a pair of shoes.

Mrs Lim finds it harder because if she wears heels, the amount of force applied by the pointier heel is greater and more likely to sink into the soil due to smaller area with large mass.  Mr Lim doesn't have as much of a problem because his mass is distributed by his entire feet profile.

This is the reason why you also get dents and alike in good timber floors if silly women wear high heels/stillettos on them....

from the formula F = ma

force is inversely proportional to area

therefore, smaller area means bigger force

shoes have big contact area with the ground, therefore less force is applied per unit area and therefore make Mr. Lim the winner in this walking competition XD

hills have very small contact area with the ground, therefore more force is applied per unit area and therefore Mrs. Lim will be the "sore"(foot) loser XD.

you can imagine yourself standing on 4 pieces of chopstick tied together....now u know the pain of wearing heels...
