  1. you need to know the height of the ridge above the top of the wall(rise), and the distance from the ridge to the outside wall(run) which is half the width of your house on a gable roof.

    so you are trying to figure how many inches the roof rises in 1 foot of run. i.e. if the rise is 6', your house is 24' wide(12' run) then the pitch is 72" divided by 12' or 6/12 pitch.
