Question:

Given the incompetence of the UK Government, is it time to save face and pull the plug on the Olympics now?

Not only would we save our national reputation, we would save £10Bn (and counting!)

How will foreign visitors to the games take to having their personal details put on a disc and left on a the tube?

  1. It is - but with Ebeeeneezer Brooon in control - he cant even see/admit  that the Labour party is fecked....never mind the Olympics...

  2. A very short answer,i think the Chinese Olympics WILL NEVER BE SURPASSED,excellent organisation, trouble control, etc, cannot be faulted in todays climate of petty squabbles. However,to talk of pulling out is not an option,we shall just have to be different.

  3. Oh grow up. Every country goes through their ups and downs, America is currently broke and our government is falling apart but its the people that will bring the olympics to brilliance and with a great politician like Borris Johnson, London 2012 will be awesome, stop looking at mistakes made by a nation and just leave it, if you have your problems with it consult somebody who gives a monkeys.

    Adam.

  4. It's probably too late but we should never have bid for the olympics as we can't afford it.  If we paid for it by getting out of the war with Iraq, I'd understand slightly but our education system needs money, our hospitals need money, our poor and elderly need money - we do not need this amount of money spent on what will probably by the Government's biggest ****-up of all time!!

  5. It will go over budget.

Bet the real cost will be nearer £20bn, and the Government (it will be the Conservatives by then) will proudly whistleblow every overspend to the press!

Not because they are worried about the money (they don't care, it's only taxpayers money!) but because they don't want to be blamed for the waste!

  6. It's impossible. We've already spent tens of millions of pounds already. There is no alternative venue (bar Beijing, Athens or possibly Sydney again) that could host the games at such short notice. It would mean Britain would be universally seen as spineless and penny pinching. It would damage our reputation far, far more to be the first country in the history of the games to back down.

  7. No - there'll be a different government by the Olympics anyway.

  8. To all those who think that Britain should carry regardless and host the 2012 Olympic games, put your money where your mouth is and dip your hand in your OWN pocket, NOT mine, thank you very much.

And while we're at whats the bloody price of oil got to do with it.

The £10Bn+ is going to be spent mainly in London and the S.East, WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, DON'T WE COUNT.

I'm English not Scottish, but I can now see why Scotland wants it's independence, and to be honest, good luck to em.

  9. it is time but he wont. its too good a reason 4 him to tax us to death.

  10. Are you insane?!

This gives the worlds largest stage to the vain 'New' Labour clique, carte blanche with public finances (all these empty promises of keeping the costings low are nothing but that) and the bragging rights for the next millenia that it was a Labour government that hosted the 'Most Successful Olympics Ever!'

I know Stratford in East London where the frivolities will be based well and its filled with 'Rachman' type sh itholes, ripe for picking.  Pity, as there are plenty such s**+ tholes in Birmingham and Manchester who have excellent transport links and are easier to get to, but hey, London IS the centre of the Universe that is the South East.

The next 4 years will be so much fun! Watch the price skyrocket.

  11. Look, stop being silly.

Changing your mind about hosting the Olympics would not SAVE FACE. It would be downright irresponsible.

It takes ages to plan and raise money to host an event like that, and so even if London went along with your ridiculous suggestion, which other country or city would be able to prepare for an Olympics in less than 4 years?

  12. They may not save face, but they would save a h**l of a lot of money!

Money that could be better spent on health-care, education, and ensuring the sick and elderly have enough fuel to get them through the winter.

  13. I think the nation would lose even more face if it hypothetically cancelled the London Olympics. How bad would that look, effectively saying the nation is not up to it and so poor do we think we are we are not even going to try. That would instantly write the nation and people of Britain of as no hopers.

At least the athletes that competed in China didn't have that attitude and came out with the best performance in a hundred years.

    Success requires a positive attitude!

  14. I think we should be honoured to host such a worldwide event, and as for rising costs seen the price of oil recently? point made.

  15. I agree, there is no point spending more, just write off what has been spent the UK tax payer is being squeezed to tight already.
