Question:

Giving Tylenol to 5 month old baby?

I have a friend who has a 5 month old baby. The babysitter is his grandma and she is a little catty when it comes to real answers. She won't remember when or how much tylenol she gives the baby. She knows it is within limits though. Should my friend be concerned about the baby possibly being on Tylenol daily? Do you know of any long term effects? I thought that maybe the baby would not respond to Tylenol after chronic use but I am not really sure. Please help!

  1. My baby's pediatrician says that if the baby needs it when they are that young to only give .4 (it is marked on the dropper).  Giving it daily with no reason could cause the baby to become used to it, meaning it won't be effective should he need it.

  2. I agree with the other ladies, and like Nina said, why is the baby getting Tylenol? Is the baby constantly crying? Maybe the baby needs attention, or is hungry. That would really concern me. Is the baby on a schedule? These are things you can ask your friend, and encourage her to find someone else, even if it costs money. Baby's well being is the most important thing.

  3. Well, what I did was give my 6 month old a little less than half of what the bottle said to give a 2 year old. But my doctor then told me that parents shouldnt give babies medicine, just let their cold or whatever it is to run it's course.

  4. Sounds to me like she might need to find a different babysitter, I know that's harsh but if it was my son that's what I would do. Or  she could just tell grandma no Tylenol! I only give my son Tylenol for a fever or if he is crying uncontrollably and I think he might be in pain. I am talking maybe 1-2 times a month.

  5. Tylenol can cause liver damage. Why is she giving the baby Tylenol daily? If there is a need for Tylenol daily then there may be a serious medical problem. No baby should be on continuous over-the-counter medication like that.

If it is for teething, tell her to try Orajel and Hyland's Natural Teething Tablets.

If the grandmother can't remember how much Tylenol she has given the baby, she doesn't sound fit to be the baby's caregiver, IMO.

  6. Why is she giving the baby Tylenol?   Tylenol is not good for anyone on a daily basis.  Causes liver and kidney damage.  If the baby is teething topical treatments like baby Oragel should only be used.
