Donating a Kidney, daughter to father?

So my dad had a kidney transplant 13 years ago and he is due for another one soon. He will be 50 this year and just had triple bipass surgery 6 months ago. His kreatnin level is starting to go up a little (it is around 7), although he does not neeeeed the dilaysis yet because he can still function. My mom and I are probably both going to be tested to see if either one of us can do it (I know I am a match b/c i am his daughter.)

I really want to do it because I do not want to have him suffer through all of the dialysis again. I just don't know if I could personally handle it.

I am very upset and confused. Can anyone give me some advice??

(I am 18)

  1. If it was my dad that may soon need a kidney, I would most definitely give it to him.  Since you are young, I do not know if the doctors would allow that.  I know we can live on one kidney but if you are not healthy then things may go wrong.  Do what you feel is best.  Good luck and god bless.

  2. There is a slight possibility that you will not be a match with your father. With that said, there is a huge possibility that you are. Anyhow, If his creatinine levels are around 7, then that is somewhat good for now. My only advice that I have for you is to go and find some form of a support group with those who have family with kidney disorders. They are very helpful!

  3. That's a wonderful thing for you to do for your dad. If you decide to do it, make sure it's your honest decision, and that you weren't guilted into it by anyone. If I were a match, I'd sit down and give some serious thought to the situation. I'd research forums and sites on the internet to read up on people who have donated kidneys, to see what they went through. Educate yourself on it, think hard and rationally about the issue, and if donating it is still what you choose to do, then I think that's great. Best wishes to you and your family.
