Question:

Giving a speech?

I'd like to give a speech in front of an audience (not including my friends/relatives/classmates), and I was wondering how I would go about doing that. How could I organize it, and get enough people to come for it to be any worthwhile? I am pretty comfortable in front of an audience, public speaking isn't that hard for me. My speech would be pretty controversial.

The main questions I have are:

Where would I find a place to do it?

How would I get an audience?

What are some ways to deal with hecklers/angered people?

What are some tips on giving the speech/writing it?

  1. have a backyard bbq. place a soapbox in the middle of your yard and start shoutin'  i'd do it before dinner so they'll wait for the burgers and won't just leave.

  2. It totally depends on what your speech is about. I helped to organize a political rally in February that had more than 10,000 attendees. If you want a large audience, make sure that your speech is applicable and interesting to a broad base. you might also try contacting local media (newspapers, bloggers) and let them know that you're throwing an event. If you can't draw people with your speech topic, try bringing some good entertainment (a band or some catered food).

If you feel confident in what you're saying, you won't have a problem with hecklers, and if you feel confident in what you believe, you won't have a problem writing your speech.
