Question:

Giving expressed breastmilk to 2 y.o?

I am currently nursing a one-month old. Every morning I express one bottle of breast milk just in case I need to go out without her. Most days I don't need it and I end up throwing the milk away. Instead of pitching it, could I give the milk to my 2 year old son in a cup? I know that the nutrional content will be correct for the newborn and not for the toddler, but it's not going to harm him, right? I hate throwing it if there's no need.

And if you're going to suggest that I freeze the breast milk for later, it won't work. My freezer is really awful and a new fridge is not going to be in the budget anytime soon. ;) Thanks!

  1. I would say that its probably ok....I am not an expert though cos my son was always bottle fed..but breast milk is so good for babies I cant see why it wouldnt be great for a toddler..if you can get him to drink it???  it may have been a while and he may not like it to start with...give it a try and see how he goes!!  next time you see the doctor just ask what they think!! good luck

  2. Its absolutely a great idea!  Definetly better than a vitamin or anything!  He'll get all kinds of nutrients, and the boost to his immune system.  I tried giving my 3 year old my pumped milk when she was sick, but she insisted that she couldnt take her sisters milk, lol!  I told her that it was extra milk just for her but she just kept saying "That milk is for Charlotte mommy!"  lol

  3. It would be great to give it to your 2yo it still has a lot of nutritional content just not enough to sustain him for the day.

  4. my children were 17 months apart and i used to give my daughter the left over expressed milk if it couldnt be used again and its done her no harm!!

  5. Save money and give your toddler extra antioxidants etc.  Just don't give it to him in the infant bottle:-)

  6. Actually it is perfectly safe for a toddler to drink the breastmilk and it does have nutrional value for them just not all the value they will need for the day.  If your 2 year old will drink it there is no harm giving it to him.
