Just got my cat back from the vet, he was diagnosed with inflamed gums and small oral ulcers. She said it was very common and should pass on its own. She prescribed a pain med buprenex. Has anyone had experience with this medication? How did it affect your cat? Anyone have experience with gum oral ulcers? The vet said his teeth were ok for a 12 year old and did not even need cleaning unless his condition worsens.

  1. sure

  2. Should be fine

  3. hmmm

  4. Buprenex is a very potent pain medication, which is given orally.  Your cat doesn't have to actually ingest the medication, it will be absorbed as long as it makes contact with the gums.  It may cause mild sedation, but there are very few side affects, it is a very safe drug.  I'm glad to hear that your visit went well, and that your cat was given a promising prognosis. :)

  5. ...

  6. It's a very common and effective pain drug for cats, it doesn't really "drug" them when properly dosed.

I'd be concerned with the oral ulcers though - did you get any kind of antibiotics?  It sounds like the beginning of periodontal disease, which many vets treat very aggressively since the bacteria from it causes a real overload on the cat's kidneys.  If it doesn't go away on it's own, and quickly, I'd be getting another opinion.

  7. Well having inflamed gums is common as a pet ages. Since your pet is 12, most cats are more likely to have bad teeth all due to their age. The medicine you have is perfectly fine. Most vets know what their talking about when they say there's no need for your pet to get cleaning because they deal with teeth on a daily issue. If you cat was much younger, lets say 2, then for sure it would be wise to get the teeth clean but you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Just give your medicine as prescribe and let your cat enjoy his/her life. =)
