Giving personal information to a cashier?

I always politely refuse to give personal info to a cashier when they ask, but lately when I have been shopping in the U.S. and the cashier made a mistake, they tell me they need my name and phone number for the voided receipt. When I refuse to give it to them, they insist that it is necessary so that the company knows they didn't make up the transaction since they don't have a manager working with them at night.

They have security cameras in the stores, and their cash should balance with the transactions at the end of the evening, so there shouldn't be any need for me to give personal info to verify their mistake.

How can I avoid this the next time a cashier makes a mistake? Aren't there laws that protect us from having to give out personal information unneccessarily?

Give a fake name and number to humor them.  Otherwise they need to call the manager on duty.  There is always someone in charge no matter what time of day or night.
