Question:

Giving piano recitals at local nursing homes, is it a good idea?

I have studied the piano for 24 yrs, I have a Bachelor's in music (piano) and am also a piano teacher. I was thinking about offering piano recitals at local nursing homes, since I've seen that most of them have a piano in an auditorium or activities room. I don't want it to be too formal, just a means that I can entertain the elderly people at these facilities. I know they all appreciate music and it is proven fact that people can improve greatly with music listening/playing. I was thinking of maybe making it regular, like once a week for 1 or 2 hours each session. Do you guys think it is a good idea? I love playing and would like to share my skill for the benefit of other people who need it and appreciate it. How can I offer my services to them? Who should I talk/write to? How much do you think could be a reasonable fee? Any suggestions will be really appreciated. Thanks! (I live in Lakeland - central FL)

  1. You would want to talk to the nursing home administrator and or the activities director. Check the phone book for homes in your area, or check with the patient ombudsman at your local hospital for a list of homes in your area.

Most likely they would love you to volunteer.  I don't know about getting paid, but even if you just volunteered for one day a week it would be great.

I know when my mom was in the nursing home they had different activities every day, and music was greatly attended. Especially if the music was the top hits of the 30's 40's & 50's.

Keep in mind you'll have to have at the least a TB test and a flu shot when its flu season. And depending on your state's laws, a background check is probable.

    Good luck with your endeavor!
