I am crazy, but I've always wanted to chase these things since I was a kid. I mean, how do I even become a storm chaser or befriend any storm chasers if I live far away in Australia?

How do you become a storm chaser? Are there other people that I can join and chase these storms with that actually have experience with tornados and big storm cells?

  1. Learn about the make up of a storm first, learn how to read radars, learn unstability factors like wind shear, dew point, etc. You should learn how a supercell works, and what causes a tornado. There is more to storm chasing then driving out to the cell and watching it.  It's very enjoyable and humbles you, it's not crazy, it's a very good field to get into.

  2. Check out the storm chasers web site and find out if you still would like to do it because it is not for the faint of heart and I am not saying you are. It tales a lot of practice and you should follow a team around for awhile just to see if it is your cup of tea.

  3. There are groups in the states that will take you out storm chasing with them, which is probably a good idea to do on a holiday before you decide that's what you want to give up Australia for.  There is usually a fee involved of course, but you'll get a good feel for it all and find out first hand whether or not it's something you want to stick with.
