Alviro Petersen’s spectacular century guided Glamorgan to a comfortable victory over Lancashire by 69 runs in a match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the Colwyn Bay Cricket Club Ground in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Sunday, August 21, 2011.
The match did not start on scheduled time, as rain had hit the venue. There has been plenty of rain in England this summer, affecting a lot of games.
However, the conditions cleared quickly and the umpires walked out to inspect the ground once the covers were taken off the field. Due to the loss of time, 33 overs were allotted to each side.
Although both teams would have liked a complete match, they would have still been satisfied to get some action in the end.
Lancashire’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steven-Croft-c2583 won the toss and had no hesitation in mind to field first. Although the pitch looked in very good condition for batting, the visitors expected some moisture beneath it due to the rain before start of play.
Croft predicted that his bowlers would get some pace and swing in the first 10 overs of the innings and the batsmen might struggle to score runs freely.
However, the decision to field first did not prove to be an ideal one for the Lancashire team, as the bowlers got no assistance off the pitch and got pounded for runs.
Glamorgan’s innings was started by their regular pair of openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Rees-c1461 and skipper Petersen. Both batsmen came out with a positive intent and smashed the bowlers to all parts of the park.
They were a bit hesitant to take risks in the first couple of overs, but decided to attack the opposition after finding the pitch easy for batting.
At one stage, it appeared that the home team’s openers would bat out until the end. They put together 199 runs for the first wicket, clobbering the bowlers mercilessly.
Lancashire finally had some success, as they got the wicket of Rees in the 25th over of the innings. He had done his job, collecting 76 runs off 69 balls with the help of seven fours and three towering sixes.
The next wicket to fall in the innings was that of Petersen, who was in superb form. The South African ended up with 144 runs from just 89 deliveries. His assault included 9 fours and 10 thunderous sixes.
Middle-order players http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stewart-c91370 Walters made most of the start provided by the openers and collected an unbeaten 75-run stand for the fifth wicket. Their effort guided the team to 328 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 33 overs.
Wagg scored 31 runs off just 13 balls whereas Walters smashed 51 from 19 with the help of seven fours and two sixes.
All the Lancashire bowlers conceded more than 9 runs per over, but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tom-Smith-c2704 managed to pick up a couple of wickets.
