Glamorgan v Scotland – Clydesdale Bank 40 (Group B) – Match Update – Rees and Allenby power http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glamorgan-c784 to 8-wicket win
Opener Gareth Rees’ half-century, coupled with Jim Allenby’s all-round performance, saw Glamorgan claiming an 8-wicket win over Scotland in a Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B match, played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 29.
Scotland won the toss and skipper Preston Mommsen elected to bat first – however, his team were unable to do justice to the decision. Josh Davey (11) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Calum-Scott-MacLeod-c49129 (21) appeared to have got their team off to a respectable start, but their opening stand
was cut off abruptly at 27 runs, after the former was dismissed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-Jones-c2531 in the 6th over.
MacLeod was sent back to the pavilion in the 10th over, by Allenby (who eventually finished with figures of 8-1-16-3), with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Charles-Glover-c67524 (who also claimed a three wicket haul, with figures
of 8-0-34-3).
The flurry of wickets continued with the dismissals of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 were at 54 for 5 by the 16th over, but found some much-needed respite in the 6th
wicket partnership of Mommsen (41) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ewan-Fraser-Chalmers-c56547 (38).
The duo joined forces for a 70-run stand which enabled their side to reach triple figures – by the 35th over, the team total had reached 124. However, the very same over resulted in two losses for Scotland – Mommsen was bowled by Glover, followed
by the dismissal of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Flannigan-c2230, lbw, on duck.
The remainder of the batting order were unable to stage an effective comeback, and Scotland were restricted to 151 by the end of 40 overs, at the expense of 9 wickets.
In comparison, Glamorgan put forth a composed batting display which saw them comfortably chasing 152 at the expense of just two wickets (both claimed by Berrington). Openers Rees (60*) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Wallace-c1913 (24) succeeded in posting a combined total of 65 runs
on the board, after which Wallace was sent back to the pavilion in the 10th over, caught out by Davey off Berrington.
Chris Cooke (13) did not prove to be an effective partner for Rees, and their partnership yielded only 26 runs, coming to an end in the 14th over, with Cooke’s dismissal. However, Allenby (39*), who followed him to the crease, managed to team
up with Rees for a steady 63* run stand, which saw their team home with 72 deliveries to spare.
