Question:

Glasgow Scotland parking?

I am hoping to get some advice – We are picking up our rental car at the Glasgow airport around 10:30am and then would like to spend the afternoon in Glasgow. We will then be traveling on to Melrose to our lodging for the night and the thought is to park somewhere convenient to the road to Melrose and perhaps taking public transportation into the city. Does this make sense? I think I want to avoid bringing the car into the city due to traffic and parking issues.

  1. Parking is a pain in Glasgow however if you're willing to walk a wee bit you can park for quite cheap.  It depends what day and what time you'll be in the city- either way if you're picking up a car at the airport you'll be hitting the traffic at some point.

The carpark I've linked to is brilliant(the second one called high street)- 60p an hour is nothing really.  Its up by the cathedral so quite near some tourist like places and only 10 mins from George Square.  It is also literally 2 minutes off the motorway so you won't get stuck in traffic for too long if you park there.

This link below has a map of the city so you can see where High Street is, it also has a big list of all the car parks plus prices.

Is it possible to pick the car up later?  You might be easier (and cheaper) getting a bus into the centre and then back to pick up car after.  The Kingston Bridge (Which you can't avoid) can be a major nightmare at peak times.

  2. Hi,

I'm not sure where the road to Melrose is in I'm sorry so I'm not sure how far out of the city centre. But I would definitely say it's worth avoiding driving in the city centre at all, particularly around peak times. It's slow-moving, annoying and parking is incredibly high priced in the city-centre carparks.  This way you get more funding and a time to spend in Glasgow.

Also, unfortunately, Glasgow is different from Edinburgh in that there isn't a lot to see, tourist-wise. However, be sure to check out George Square, it's beautiful! Also, when you're in George square remember to smile, because you'll be on the George Square webcam!

Hope you have a great day in Glasgow
