Glasgow Warriors hooker Fergus Thomson’s shoulder injury forces him out of Rugby World Cup
Glasgow Warriors hooker Fergus Thomson’s 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) aspirations come to an unpleasant end as a shoulder injury has ruled him out of the game for approximately six months.
On May 10, Andy Robinson, Scotland Rugby Union national team’s head coach had announced Thomson was to be part of the 40-man provisional rugby squad that would be playing the World Cup. After sustaining the injury, Thomson’s
addition in the team was tentative. Scotland’s team doctor James Robson has confirmed the news of Thomson’s shoulder injury in a statement released on the club website on Wednesday May 25.
Providing the details, Robson commented that the Scottish international hooker visited specialist surgeon, Julie McBirnie at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital, a few weeks back. Thomson had made numerous complaints against the pain
in his shoulder but was avoiding a thorough check up. Dr. Julie McBirnie carried out tests and the reports later revealed a serious injury to Thomson’s shoulder at three different locations.
Dr.  Robson said, “He required three separate components in his shoulder to be repaired and, as a result, will not be able to participate in our Rugby World Cup training squad and has been ruled out of consideration for the
tournament itself."
Dr. Robson further added that the treatment might require performing more than one surgery and the injury would take more than six months to heal. He further added that any effort for a quick recovery might have adverse effects
on the injury and will deny the hooker the ability to participate in the next domestic season.
Dundee born Thomson joined the Scottish Rugby Union Club Glasgow Warriors in 2009 on a two-year deal.  He has played 24 games for the Warriors during the 2010/11 domestic and Europeans competitions.
The 27-year-old Thomson has expressed hope for a speedy recovery so that he can be a part of the club at the start of next season. He said, “My focus will be on working hard with the Glasgow physios on my rehab so that I can be back challenging for a place
with the Warriors as soon as possible.” However, Scotland and Warriors utility front row has expressed his disappointment at losing the opportunity to play at the World Cup.
Thomson made his international debut for Scotland against a touring Ireland side in 2007. The same year he played against the All Blacks during the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Thomson so far has made eight international appearances for the Scotland and has represented
the national rugby union team in Six Nations and Calcutta Cup.
Scotland national Rugby Union is yet to announce a replacement for Thomson. Andy Robinson has termed Fergus’ exclusion from the 2011 RWC as disappointing and wished him a rapid recovery.
