Glasgow reveals bid plans to host 2018 Youth Olympics
The city of Glasgow, Great Britain has recently revealed its plan for the bid to play host to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The bidding plan was made public at the Kelvingrove Art gallery where many prominent members of the civic and sports community were
present to provide their support.
The bid was officially launched by Dame Kelly, who is a double Olympic gold medallist.
Gordon Matheson, who is the city council leader, shared his views in the following statements, “Young people are at the very heart of our bid and will be our strongest voice as we go all out to bring the Youth Olympic Games to these shores for the first
time. A successful campaign would continue the legacy created by the London 2012 Olympic Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, helping us to continue to work hard together with young people to help them build the bright future they deserve.”
The other candidate cities for the 2018 Youth Olympics include Argentina’s Buenos Aires, the Mexican city of Guadalajara, Poznan of Poland, Medellin of Colombia and the Netherland’s Rotterdam.
The key feature in Glasgow’s bid to stage the 2018 Youth Olympics is the fact that the city will be hosting several events of the London 2012 Olympic Games that are scheduled to start from July 27. Glasgow will be staging a total of eight football matches
during the London Olympics while the venue will be the Hampden Park.
The Glasgow bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics has also been backed by Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. Coe expressed his feelings on the Glasgow bid in the following manner, “I want to see, in all four corners
of the United Kingdom, people bidding for things.”
It will not be until the summer of 2013 that the host city for the 2018 Youth Olympics will be selected. It is estimated that the Youth Olympics will feature a total of 3000 athletes between the age of 15 and 18. Altogether, there will be 28 sporting events
in the Youth Olympics in which the young athletes could take part.
In case Glasgow succeeds in playing the host for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, the event will act as a legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games which are also to be staged in the city.
