I am doing a character study on Amanda Wingfield from the Glass Menagerie, my metaphor is a boxer that is knocked down in a fight but unwilling to give up. (persistence)

That's pretty good, you might also consider a distance runner and the lonliness and futility that sets in as they reach thee final steretch and half to push through that to get to the finishline, or even a wrestler on his back angainst a superior opponent but determined not to be pinned even if he must lose.
