Glass display case in the floor?

My husband wants to install a glass casing in the floor just big enuff to place a Steelers Terrible Towel in, we are about to put in the hardwood floor and wondering if anyone had any suggestions, or if you have heard of doing anything like this.

  1. I would contact a glass company for a custom piece and their recommendations.  A good starting point to search for might be 3/4" tempered safety glass, but they could tell you other options.

    I would ensure that the towel is perfectly flat, (check for bumpy stitched seams, such as at the corners) and lay the glass directly on top of the towel, rather than leaving a gap (shadowbox).  The idea being a flat, even contact will spread out pressure better.

    The carpenter can create a flush frame design around the cutout which would complete the design.  The custom glass might take time to order, so plan accordingly.


  2. I doubt glass would hold up. Maybe plexiglass. Check with a glass shop.
