Glass or wire cage which is best for gerbals

My husband and I are considering getting a Gerbil for our sons, when I spoke to the person in the pet shop she said I needed to get a glass tank to keep it in as they are animals that like to dig. I have a wire cage that I used to keep my hamster in. so what I am asking is do I need to get a glass cage or will my wire one do .

Glass, the gerbils are strong and can get through the slightly larger gaps between the bars in the corner of a wire cage and if the cage is the type with a plastic bottom they can chew through the plastic and escape.  Wouldnt a hamster be a better choice anyway?  I always found gerbils to be agressive.  Or a rat, they're great!

A glass cage is a lot better because it may seem impossible but gerbils can chew throu the wires.
