Question:

Glass thickness?

My shaper did double 4 ounce on my last board and he said he'll happily do 6 ounce and 4 ounce on my next one. He prefers pushing people to lighter boards so he doesn't like going any thicker.

Where do "double 4 ounce" and "6 ounce and 4 ounce" lie on the scale?

Whats the thinnest and thickest you can get?

Thanks.

  1. A double 4oz would only mean 8oz. Your shaper wants to top out at 10oz. If your not a competition surfer, and ride a shortboard, a full 6oz, with a 6oz deck patch, and a full 6oz bottom will be a lot more durable. It really won't add much weight, but will add up to a stronger board. The thinnest would be a full double 4oz fabric deck and single 4oz bottom. The standard full thickness is double 6oz deck, full 6 oz bottom. I'm not a competitor, or professional shaper, but on the boards that I have made, I've only used 6oz cloth. I have no clue as to why your shaper only wants to use 10oz max. It's only a matter of a few dollars in cost.
