Question:

Glasses wearers advice please.

Is it normal for your eyes to ache after wearing new first time glasses for the first few times? As I now have to wear them for driving and other concentration tasks as I have slight astigmatism and am long sighted. What was your first ever experience of wearing glasses like? Will things improve for me as at the moment I am on the verge of just putting them to the side and not bothering with them as they are causing discomfort. Although I can see much better with them on, should I give it more time?

  1. When i got glasses i wore them for a little while then took them off then wore them for a little longer then took them off again. By the next day i could comfotaly wear my glasses all day.

  2. I too am long sighted I only need glasses for reading and at the comp. every time I get new ones I have the same problem can only wear them for short periods of time it gets better after a few days its just adjusting to the new lenses, give it a bit longer and see how you go .

  3. Yeah, it's normal for your eyes to feel weird or even hurt a little bit when you get new glasses. And that's true for every time your prescription changes, even if you've been wearing glasses for as long as you can remember.

  4. Dear human,

You did not say the type of your ache, if it is a dull ache; I believe it will be okay by the time. If its not that type, I would like to ask you to contact your eye doc asap.

  5. Yeh, the eyes take a little time to adjust, however if after a week they haven't settled down go bak to the optician.

  6. its like having to wear shoes you just get used to them.

    eventualy

you will not notice them so much...

  7. It does take a little while to get used to them, stick with it.

  8. Yes. Perfectly normal. Your eyes are getting used to seeing things more clearly, it will soon go away. Also, your nose get's sore from them rubber things that sits on it! I also need it for computer, and reading the white board, and watching television.

  9. I'm long sighted and have astigmatism too.  I've worn glasses, and now contacts, since I was four.  I have just got my first pair of varifocals, I can totally sympathise with you!  New glasses are a nightmare to get used to.  Persevere with them, give your eyes a rest from time to time and don't wear them for driving until you are totally used to them because they will really distort your perception of distance and speed, (so long as you can see without them of course!)

  10. Keep wearing them. If after a week of wearing them, the discomfort doesn't at least become less intense, then see your optometrist :]

When I first got my glasses they gave me headaches and sometimes eye aches for a week or so but it's all good now and I've had them for about a year or maybe a bit less.

  11. It is normal for glasses to hurt your eyes when you first get them, especially if it is your first time ever wearing glasses. Your eyes will just need to adjust to them.

However, if you find that this is continuing for a while or if the pain gets worse you should seek the help of your optician if you suspect anything. If the pain gets worse and is continuing it could be that your optician hasn't prescribed the right glasses for you (for example, the lenses could be too strong). This is unlikely, but it has happened to someone I know.

And of course, you could always get a second opinion from another opticians by getting an eye test somewhere else.

    Hope that helped. :-)

  12. you'll adjust to them,

first time i wore mine they hurt my head to i had to take paracetamol, which was ironic as i have them to stop my eyes and head hurting...

but ive adjusted to them, and now its fine.

  13. As everyone has advised, give them time to adjust. If, after a few weeks they are still causing discomfort, go back and explain to your optician.

All glasses and all eyes are different: most spectacle wearers who have several pairs of glasses will tell you they use a different pair for different purposes  -one pair is better for reading, another for working in the garden etc.

I have paid £300 for a pair, and yet a £10 pair I bought off the shelf from my local library are better for using with my pc screen! Go figure.

  14. yeah give it more time i hated wearing my glasses at first too as i found it so frustrated for something that i had to use to stop my headaches was giving me discomfort in another way
