Hey guys, me,hubby and 3yo son would be migrating to sydney soon. I have found some affordable places to start out in the above-mentioned suburbs. For Glebe, it is along Glebe pt road; for Burwood, the place is called Boronia Lodge; for ashfield, it is Ashfield Manor B&B. We would initially rent(for a month?) a self-contained appartment/ share accom. Please, please rate the suburbs i mentioned with regards to safety(very, very important as we have a child in tow), accessibility to the city, and accessibility to shops where we can do some grocery shopping for everyday needs, and proximity to places where we can buy affordable food for take-away. Thanks a lot!

Oh, and if you have some other suggestions of places to stay at, that would be great. Budget is at most 500AUD/wk, internet access is a must =) We actually plan to work in the city(we're IT folks), and look for a place to rent (after we find work) somewhere up north, but the serviced appts up north are quite pricey.

Thanks again!

  1. I lived in and around Ashfield for five years and it was always safe - it's a very suburban area. Ashfield Manor looks to be near a busy intersection very close to one unit I once lived in. My only caveat would be that Liverpool road is often busy and sometimes noisy. There is also a quick train to the city from Ashfield, which is handy. 20 mins at most (delays permitting). The Ashfield Mall is about a 15 minute walk from AM, there's loads of inexpensive take away in Ashfield as well - Chinese and Lebanese and an RSL club on the next block.

Glebe is very close to the city centre by bus (10min in low traffic, maybe 20 in bad traffic) and the university (UTS). There is no train station in Glebe. Some parts are really nice and expensive, others not so much. Glebe Point Road has a really nice vibe to it, though - there is a very 'green' aspect to Glebe, probably due to many uni students living in the area. Lots of cafes, but in some cases this will be more expensive than Ashfield or Burwood as Glebe is like a  hip young area.

Burwood is further from the city, as has the least vibe of the places you mentioned. I've never lived there, but I would assume it's relatively safe as Sydney is generally very safe - if you don't do anything stupid. It has a fast train option as well, but is further out and in my experience the trains on the western line through Burwood are 50% likely to have rif raf on them.

In summary ;-) I would stay in Glebe if I were you. It's close to everything and has more of a community sense to it than the area in Ashfield where Ashfield Manor is. There's a HUGE mall and cinema complex, weekend markets and it's just generally a nice, popular area.

    I hope that helps!

  2. 1. Glebe - closer to city and safer

    2. Ashfield - very busy

    3. Burwood - a bit violent

Shops are not an issue, there are Woolworths and Coles everywhere

  3. they are all good suburbs with both Ashfield and Burwood having train stations and Glebe access by bus only. all 3 also have access to shopping malls. Broadway at the City end of Glebe Point rd, Ashfield Mall and Westfields Burwood. Glebe is very cosmopolitan, Burwood is multicultural and Ashfield has a large Asian community.
