Glen Davis, Thaddeus Young: Top contenders for ‘Sixth Man of the Year’ next NBA season – Part 1
In the last season, Los Angeles Lakers veteran power forward Lamar Odom was named as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. While the 31-year-old Odom has favourable chances to clinch the honour once again next season, many other players
will give him tough time in doing so.
Here is the list of top five contenders for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in the 2011-2012 season.
Glen Davis
Boston Celtics prolific bench player Glen Davis, who is also nicknamed as Big Baby, had a breakout season in 2010-2011 and posted a career-best in all aspects of the game. Davis registered an average of 11.7 points, 5.4 rebounds,
1.2 assists and 1.0 steal per game and was by far the best reserve in the team.
Although Glen Davis is a free agent and it’s not certain that he will be seen in the Celtics uniform next season. However, irrespective of his final destination, he is bound to make an impact. The burly power forward wants to play
for a championship contender next season and given that his playing position is covered in most of the franchises, it is almost a certainty that he will continue to be a role player in any franchise he lands.
His situation is also augmented by the fact that until now in his career, Big Baby has never been able a create a niche as a starter and if he does find a team in the free agency, which is willing to play him as a starter, his
physical fitness and toughness might come into question.
Thaddeus Young
Philadelphia 76ers’ dynamic forward Thaddeus Young has great basketball skills and he has given an ample proof of that in his four years of NBA career. Apart from being a prolific scorer, the 23-year-old Young is also a solid rebounder
and he was one of the major reasons behind 76ers success late in the last season.
However, till now, Young has had to live under the shadow of Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala. With Brand already in the twilight of his career, and Iguodala a potential trade prospect, the window of opportunity might be opening
up for Thaddeus. However till that happens, he has to fill in for the more experienced players. It isn’t that he is bad at this job. Last season, he scored at an average of 12.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and with him gaining experience, Young can be
a formidable contender for the Sixth Man of the Year award next season.
