Glen Johnson may join Super Six tournament
Promoter Lou Dibella has told Rick Reeno of BoxingScene that light heavyweight Glen Johnson may replace Mikkel Kessler in the third stage of the Super Six boxing tournament.
Reeno also put a lid on recent reports that Sakio Bika would be replacing Kessler, saying that Bika rejected a potential bout with Allan Green for 'personal reasons'.
For many, the news regarding Johnson is a surprise, but isn’t without logic. Johnson, though an aged fighter, is still a top-ten contender. In his last bout, he went the distance with one of the best in his division, IBF light heavyweight titlist Tavoris
Cloud. Spanning throughout his seasoned career he’s taken on the best, and routinely come out on top.
But more than that, this is really about promotional ties. Johnson is promoted by Dibella, who also promotes Green. That means arranging a fight between the two would be a lot easier than introducing another promoter into the mix.
A Green-Johnson bout could take place, perhaps as a Showtime co-feature for the Juan Manuel Lopez-Rafael Marquez card on November 6. Dibella confirmed that November 6 was not yet set, but that he expects that if a deal is made, the bout will be in November.
"It's being worked on. We're discussing it. It's a very good opportunity for Glen Johnson and I think it would be a good fight. Nothing is definite yet, but when there is something to definite to announce, Showtime will announce it," DiBella said to
BoxingScene.
For Johnson, the main concern would be making weight.  Since 2001 he has been fighting at 175 pounds, and going down to the 168 pound super middle limit will not be pleasant, especially since he hasn’t done it in ten years. Compounded with the fact that
he’s 41 years old, the weight issue could pose some serious problems for Johnson.
