Glen Johnson says he came to win Super Six tournament
Glen Johnson didn’t accept an invitation the Super Six tournament to be a paper competitor.
The 41 year old veteran told Fighthype.com, "We’re in it to win it [...] I look forward to winning the tournament."
Johnson is well on his way.
Last Saturday, 6 November, he participated in his first tournament bout, where he met long time friend Allan Green in Las Vegas. A disciplined fighter resembling Bernard Hopkins’ school of thought, Johnson was able to make the super middleweight weight limit
(168 pounds) after fighting at light heavyweight (175 pounds) for the last ten years.
Johnson didn’t enter the tournament until a month ago, when he was selected to take the place of WBC emeritus champion Mikkel Kessler when he bowed out of the tournament due to a serious eye injury.
During the weekend bout Johnson scored a knock out in the eighth round, winning three points and securing a spot in the next round of competition. Afterwards, it was revealed that Green would appeal the decision, as he felt he was hit with a shot behind
the head, which is illegal in boxing.
"I never thought the punches were illegal shots and they didn’t land in an illegal spot," Johnson said. "I gotta go home and watch the fight and I will get a chance to see where the punch landed, but I really don’t think it landed in an illegal spot at all."
When asked how he remained in such great condition, Johnson said, "I think it’s the fact that I take care of myself. I train hard and look forward to competing."
For most, the future hall-of-famer would just about silence boxing’s robed elites with a win in Showtime’s prestigious tournament, which began in 2009. The win puts Johnson in contention for second spot with Arthur Abraham. In first place is WBA super middleweight
champion Andre Ward, who has six points.
