Glen Johnson takes on Andrzej Fonfara on ESPN’s ‘Friday Night Fights’ show – Boxing news
Glen Johnson, the former International Boxing Association light heavyweight champion, will enter the boxing ring for one more time against young Polish pounder Andrzej Fonfara, the current United States Boxing Organisation light heavyweight champion, in
a 10-round bout which will be held on July 13, 2012.
It seems that Glen does not believe that he has reached his limit and should hang his gloves. At the age of 43, with 51 wins out of total 69 bouts, Johnson still has the energy in his aging arms and body to take on young belligerents like Fonfara.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view jointly organised and promoted by Dominic Pesoli of 8 Count Productions and Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. The event will be televised live on ESPN’s Friday night boxing show ‘Friday Night Fights’.
In addition to the above bout, the showdown will also witness Jose Luis Castillo take on Ivan Popoca in a non-title welterweight 10-round bout, co-headlining the fight card. The event will be held at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Johnson recently gave a detailed interview and shared his thoughts about the fight and his Friday night opponent Fonfara. Glenn is going through a bit tough phase of his career, most probably due to the aging factor, as he has collected three losses in his
last four bouts.
Furthermore, the veteran is coming off a loss to Lucian Bute. While gathering his thoughts, Johnson commented that his training went well and he feels great, adding that he is excited to get in the ring and show his fans what new things he has learned.
Glenn stated, “Training went well. I feel good. I'm going to come out and look good. I feel sharp right now. I'm feeling real relaxed and energetic. I'm excited about going out there and showing the things I can do and re-establishing myself.”
When asked as to what he thinks about his opponent Andrzej, the Jamaican pounder stated, “[Fonfara is] a big, aggressive kid, who uses his jab and comes forward with the right hand and the hook. He's just an aggressive guy, basically. I love aggressive guys.
They create good fights for the people.”
Andrzej, 24, will enter the ring as the fan and odd-maker’s favourite. The young Polish lad has been in a total of 24 bouts, boasting 21 wins. Furthermore, Fonfara is coming off a pretty decent win over Byron Mitchell, grabbing the vacant United States Boxing
Organisation light heavyweight title.
