Glen Johnson to fight against George Groves– Boxing News
Former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson is making his return against Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves. The fight is scheduled to take place at London’s ExCel on December 15. Frank Warren, promoter for Groves, confirmed that
the fight would be part of the card headlined by WBO world lightweight champion Ricky Burns.
Johnson, who went into retirement sometime back, has once again stepped into the scene, claiming he would make the most out of this opportunity.
“It’s a very tough fight for George,” said Warren when asked about Johnson’s comeback. “Johnson has been around, seen it and done it in a near twenty year career so he’ll have bags of experience compared to George. But George is young, fresh, talented and
hungry and really wants to prove that he’s the next world champion in waiting. I think that the fans will be for a cracking fight between these two, plus we’ll be announcing Ricky Burns’ challenger shortly.”
Even Groves admits the fact that Johnson is a tough opponent to face.
“Johnson is a great name and it will be a fantastic fight to end the year with before looking at a world title shot next year,” said Groves.
Johnson is a true warrior and that he is expecting a tough fight, Groves added while talking about the engagement. When asked about his training for the fight, Groves shared that he would be training unusually hard, in order to make sure he is able to counter
every move made by Johnson.
On the other hand, Warren claimed that this fight would be an extremely tough one for George, as Johnson is more experienced and knows how to tackle his opponents.
Groves asserted that Johnson is a tank and he only knows to come forward, which definitely is a plus for him. However, Groves is not intimidated by Johnson, even though it is his career’s biggest fight.
George is hungry and Johnson is experienced, the fight is going to be enthralling. As Groves has already predicted, Johnson will try to be on the offensive side and Groves needs to make sure he is not beaten up to a knockout.
