Glen Perkins agrees to three $10.3 million contract with Minnesota Twins – MLB Update
Glen Perkins is one of the most talented pitchers in Minnesota Twins squad right now. Not only is he strong and clever, he also has the ability to perform to his potential even in pressure situations. The right handed reliever agreed to a three year $10.3
million contract with the Twins on Thursday. The deal will also include option for 2016, according to a source.
Perkins was on a $1.55 million contract the past year and he would have been eligible for free agency after the 2013 season. According to a leading sports website, the reliever will be eligible for performance based bonuses if he is asked to perform closer’s
duties. The deal that was finalised yesterday suggests that Perkins has come very far with the club. A few years ago, he was struggling to secure a place on the Twin’s forty men roster.
"Everyone rolled their eyes when we went through everything a few years ago, thinking this guy was buried; he was in the doghouse, this guy’s gone," said Twins assistant GM Rob Antony. "And we kept saying, 'You know what, this guy’s a member of our organization.
We want him to become what we thought he could become.' "
"We believe in having good people," Antony said. "We think Glen has matured and become a good person -- not that he wasn’t before. You can have your differences. That’s all off to the side."
However, he has shown great determination and mental toughness even in the toughest of times to change the course of his career. The guy displayed some high quality pitching skills in 2011 to post one of the finest seasons of his career. With a decent 4-4
win-loss record and a 2.48 ERA, he made the most of the available opportunities. He also won the Twins’ Comeback Player of the year Award and Twins’ Pitcher of the year Award during that season.
Perkins could have made more money by signing for the free agency. However, it is not money that motivates him to do well but his love for the game. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to the hype in 2012.
