Glenn Hall and Jeremy Flores make amends after Round 5 loss at ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Ireland’s Glenn Hall and France’s Jeremy Flores managed to claim top honours in their respective Round 6 (Round of 24) heats of the Nike Lowers Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event, which resumed at the renowned point-break of Lower
Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Friday, May 4.
Both Hall and Flores advanced into the seventh round (Round of 16) following their victory in Round 6, while Brazil’s Tomas Hermes and Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz were forced to step out of the contention for the event title due to their second-place finish.
There was plenty of action in store for the surfing fans on day 4 of the competition as glassy two-to-four foot waves graced Lower Trestles. The competition field comprising of local and international talent were rearing to take on each other in the promising
surfing conditions and moving closer to the coveted rewards that were on offer.
After failing to taste success in their previous heats, both Hall and Hermes found themselves pitted against each other in the opening heat of the relegation Round 6. They needed to bring their A-game to the sea if they wanted to make the most of the second
chance that they had received, considering the previous round in which they had failed to clinch victory was a non-elimination round.
As the first heat got underway, Hermes got off to a remarkable start, scoring a 7.83 off his first business-wave. He immediately backed it up with a 5.27-point wave to get to a heat-total of 13.10 points.
Hall got off to a rusty start, but gradually built momentum to launch a late charge. Earning a 7.00 and 6.43 off his final-two waves of the heat, the Irish surfer finished with a decisive heat-total of 13.43 points to barely edge past Hermes on the score-board
and thus move into the next round.
The second heat featured a low-scoring contest between Flores and Zietz, with both the surfers struggling to find decent scores.
The 24-year-old Flores eventually managed to clinch the win after utilising his last-two waves of the heat to post a 6.00 and 5.93 on the score-board for a resultant heat-total of 11.93 points.
Zietz, on the other hand, was only able to get to a two-wave total of 9.20 points, which included a 4.93 and 4.27-point wave.
