Glenn Hall and Ricardo Ferreira prevail in Round 2 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Glenn Hall from Ireland and Brazilian surfer Ricardo Ferreira successfully made it through into the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming victory in their respective Round
2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
Australia’s Thomas Woods and Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam were able to extend their life in the event as well after securing second place finish in their respective heats as well.
The clean three-to-four foot waves on offer at the primary event site promised to make the day an entertaining one, demanding some pretty solid performances from the young surfing talent from around the world if they wanted to stay alive in contention for
the coveted prize purse and ASP ranking points that were on offer.
The opening heat of Round 2 saw Hall pitted against Woods, his compatriot Daniel Karren and Ander Ugarte from Belarus in a battle for survival.
Hall got off to an impressive start, earning a 7.00 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 5.40 to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.40 points. The score held up until the end to see him through to victory.
Woods made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 9.93 points, which comprised of a 5.50 and 4.43-point ride.
Karren finished in third place with a two-wave total of 7.74 points, while Ugarte had to settle for bottom-place after registering a heat-total of 5.67 points. Both the surfers were removed from the contention for the event title as a result.
The second heat saw Ferreira take on Boukhiam, New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and Australia’s Lincoln Taylor in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Showing immense energy right from the word go, Ferreira scored a 6.33 off his first business-wave. Keeping the momentum going, he went on to collect an impressive 8.00 off his second business-wave, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 14.33 points.
Boukhiam accompanied the Brazilian into the next round after finishing putting on a pretty impressive performances and eventually registering a heat-total of 13.53 points to finish in runner-up place.
Stairmand finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.60 points, while Taylor had to settle for fourth place after only managing to get to a heat-total of 8.53 points. The bottom-two finish by the two surfers forced them to make a premature exit from
the event.
