Glenn Hall and Sebastien Zietz clinch top honours in Round 3 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The Reef Hawaiian Pro continued to threat the audience to intense surfing battles between some of the most exciting athletes from around the globe during the Round of 64 (Round 3) at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, November 22. The fifth heat
featured Ireland’s Glenn Hall take on Australia’s Daniel Ross, his compatriot Stu Kennedy and Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro, while Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz battled with Brazil’s Thiago Camarao, Australia’s Davey Cathels and America’s Taylor Knox in the sixth heat.
Hall came up with an impressive performance to capture victory in the fifth heat. Ross’s determined effort did not go to waste either and carried him to second position, which was sufficient to confirm his place in the Round of 32 (Round 4) as well. Kennedy
and Monteiro failed to make a solid impact during the heat and got eliminated after rounding out the third and fourth positions respectively.
The sixth heat ended in Zietz’s favour, who entertained the local crowd with an exquisite performance to seal the deal. The runner-up finish carried Camarao off into the next round as well. Cathels came real close to making it into the safety zone in the
final minutes but eventually finished short by a few points, which consequently led to his third-place finish and thus got him eliminated from the competition. Knox rounded out the bottom position to make a premature exit from the event as well.
As the fifth heat got underway, the 20-year-old Hall struggled to adjust to the demanding surfing conditions at hand. The first half of the four-man battle saw the Irish surfer desperate to find a break. However, the second half turned out to be much better
and brought a couple of relatively juicy waves in his direction, which he caught to post a 6.33 and 5.77 on the score-board to seal the fate of the contest in his favour.
Ross came across his two best waves in the final minutes of the heat as well. Earning a 4.73 off his first business wave and immediately following it up with a 5.40-point wave, the Australian finished with a heat-total of 10.13 points to finish in second
place and thus advance through into the fourth round.
Kennedy and Monteiro failed to find their rhythm during the heat and struggled to find solid scores throughout the entirety of the contest. in the end, Kennedy was forced to settle for third place with a heat-total of 6.33 points, while the Brazilian sensation
rounded out the bottom position with 2.79 points, which included a penalty for getting marked for interference on his third wave.
The sixth heat turned out to be a real treat for the crowd as the local favourite, Zietz, came up with a superb performance in challenging surfing conditions to claim victory. Taking his time to adjust to the waves and the strong off-shore winds that greeted
him at the primary event site, the 23-year-old Zietz began his charge with an impressive 7.23-point wave, which featured a flurry of quick turns and exquisite aerials. He immediately followed it up with a 6.00-point wave to take his heat-total to 13.23 points,
which served to earn him a confident victory.
Camarao collected a 6.23 and 5.67 off his last two waves of the heat to move to a heat-total of 11.90 points and finish in second place. The runner-up finish was enough to add him into the Round 3 line-up.
Cathels barely missed out on making the Round 3 cut after finishing in third place with a heat-total of 11.27 points, the 0.63-point deficit leading to his ejection from the competition. The experienced Knox faltered in his latest battle as well and finished
in fourth place after collecting a couple of fours for a heat-total of 9.00 points.
