Glenn Hall and Sebastien Zietz prevail in Round 2 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The Reef Hawaiian Pro kept entertaining the surfing fans as it continued with the Round of 96 (Round 2), pitting Ireland’s Glenn Hall against Australia’s Davey Cathels, his compatriot Nic Muscroft and Hawaii’s Dege O”Connell in the fifth heat, while featuring
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz take on his countryman Evan Valiere, Australia’s Stu Kennedy and Brazil’s Junior Faria in the sixth heat on Monday, November 21, at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
The fifth heat saw Hall come up with an impressive performance to walk away with top honours. Cathels successfully secured his place in the Round of 64 (Round 3) as well by capturing the runner-up place. Muscroft and O’Connell finished in third and fourth
place respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Zietz put up a superb performance in the sixth heat to clinch a convincing victory, while Kennedy finished as runner-up to advance through into the third round. Faria and Valiere failed to make the Round 3 cut after finished in third and fourth positions
respectively.
The surfing conditions at the primary event site were nothing short of challenging, compelling the surfers to do a little bit of extra thinking in order to get their hands on a competitive score. The 30-year-old Hall took the challenge head-on and took little
time to adjust to the head-high waves.
As the fifth heat got underway, Hall remained quite patient and waited for a juicy wave to appear before making his move. His strategy looked like a huge gamble, but it eventually paid off as he managed to lock on a 5.33 and a decisive 7.60-point wave to
finish with a heat-total of 12.93 points. The score turned out to be sufficient to carry him off to victory.
Cathels struggled to find a good score in the early stages of the heat and only managed to earn a 3.83 off his first business-wave. However, he managed to bounce back on his last wave by scoring 7.93 points off it and moving to a heat-total of 11.76 pints,
which served to secure the runner-up place for him.
Muscroft finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.00 points, which comprised of a 4.33 and 5.67-point wave. O’Connell turned out to be short on luck as well and only managed to get to a heat-total of 8.33 points. The lacklustre performance by the
two surfers resulted in their removal from the contention for the event title.
The sixth heat turned out to be pretty exciting, with much of the credit going to the outstanding performance by the 23-year-old Zietz. The Hawaiian got off to a slow start, but gradually built momentum to eventually make his charge with an impressive 8.10-point
wave, which featured a combination of exquisite manoeuvres. He soon collected another impressive 6.40-point wave to move to a winning heat-total of 14.50 points.
Kennedy successfully extended his stay in the competition by scoring a heat-total of 10.87 points, which included a 6.00 and 4.87-point wave.
Faria remained pretty impressive throughout the entirety of the 20-minute heat, but barely missed out on the runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 10.80 points. Valiere rounded out the last position after getting an 8.70 in total off his top-two
waves during the heat. The bottom-two finish resulted in elimination for the two surfers.
