Glenn Hall and Tanner Gudauskas move to Round 3 of Australian Open of Surfing – Surfing News
Ireland’s Glenn Hall and America’s Tanner Gudauskas prevailed in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) at the 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing that went down at the Manly Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Thursday, February 16.
With Hall taking first place in the 14th heat, Brazil’s Tomas Hermes managed to secure runner-up place. Both the surfers advanced through to Round 3 (Round of 48) as a result. Hawaii’s Makai McNamara and Japan’s Teppei Tajima got removed from
the contention for the event title after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
The 15th heat saw Gudauskas take the win to move into the next round. Australia’s Luke Campbell successfully avoided elimination as well by securing runner-up place. His fellow countryman Chris Salisbury finished third while Hawaii’s Roy Powers
failed to show up for the heat. Both the surfers got eliminated from the competition.
The two-foot waves at Manly Beach on Thursday offered surfers a decent opportunity to collect good scores and ensure their survival in the event.
Hall had little luck with the waves during the earlier stages of the 14th heat, but managed to post a 5.83 and 6.60 on the score-board in the final minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 12.43 points. While the score did not seem that
competitive, it proved sufficient to carry him off to victory.
Hermes finished in runner-up place after scoring a 7.33 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 4.23-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 11.56 points.
McNamara and Tajima finished with a heat-total of 9.53 and 6.63 points, consequently getting removed from the contention for the event title.
The 15th heat saw Gudauskas walk away with top honours after finishing with a heat-total of 13.00, which comprised of a 6.17 and 6.83-point wave.
Campbell never looked too comfortable during the heat but still managed to clinch runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 9.33 points.
Salisbury failed to make the Round 3 cut after finishing behind his compatriot with a two-wave total of 9.07 points.
There were still plenty of exciting surfing battles to come as Round of the Australian Open of Surfing continued on Thursday.
