Glenn Hall and Tomas Hermes prevail in Round 3 at Australian Open of Surfing – Surfing News
Ireland’s Glenn Hall and Brazil’s Tomas Hermes walked away with top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of 48) heats of men’s division at Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing at Manly Beach in New South Wales,
Australia, on Friday, February 17.
While Hall claimed top honours in the seventh heat, South Africa’s Jordy Smith finished in runner-up place. Both the surfers advanced through to Round 4 (Round of 24). Australia’s Luke Campbell and Hawaii’s Olamana Eleogram got eliminated from the competition
after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
Hermes victory in the ninth heat added him to the Round 4 line-up, while Australia’s Matt Banting accompanied him after finishing in second place. Australia’s Kai Otton finished third, while America’s Tanner Gudauskas rounded out the bottom position. Both
the surfers got eliminated from the competition as a result.
With two-foot waves, no wind and a sunny weather at the primary event site, the stage was set for a series of thrilling battles.
Hall continued to exhibit an intimidating form at Manly Beach and comfortably took top honours in his Round 3 heat on Friday after posting a 6.50 and 7.67 on the score-board to finish with a decisive heat-total of 14.17 points.
Smith may not have made the sort of impact that he was expected to make during the heat, but he still managed to survive the four-man battle after finishing in runner-up place with a heat-total of 12.37 points, which included a 6.07 and 6.30-point wave.
Campbell finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.43 points, while Eleogram rounded out the fourth position with 7.44 points.
The ninth heat saw Hermes emerge triumphant after finishing with a heat-total of 15.47 points, which included an 8.17 and 7.30 off his first and second business-waves respectively.
Banting managed to extend his life in the event as well after scoring a 6.17 and 6.93 off his top-two waves.
Otton finished third with a two-wave total of 10.33 points, while Gudauskas rounded out the bottom position with a heat-total of 8.26 points. The lacklustre performance led to their elimination from the competition.
The men’s division at Australian Open of Surfing continued with the remaining heats of Round 3.
