Glenn Hall overcomes former event champion in Round 3 of ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Ireland’s Glenn Hall claimed top honours in the fifth heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that kicked-off at the renowned beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday,
May 1.
The successful result in the third round served to carry Hall into the fourth heat (Round of 48) of the competition. Hawaii’s Kai Barger also made the Round 4 cut after managing to get his hands on the runner-up position.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site on the opening day of the competition turned out to be quite tricky. While the clean two-to-four foot waves breaking at Lower Trestles gave the surfers a number of chances to dig deep into the arsenal
of tricks to pull out stylish manoeuvres, the surfers found themselves struggling to get in sync with the waves. The surfing talent, both local and international, had a tough task at their hand as they competed against each other to lock the juicier waves
that appeared during their heats.
The 30-year-old Hall found himself pitted against Barger, Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and Australia’s Garrett Parkes in the fifth heat of Round 3.
All eyes were on Pupo, the defending event champion, as he had been exhibiting an impressive since the start of the latest season. He put on a pretty solid performance, unloading a couple of really impressive combos. An eventual heat-total of 13.87 points
eventually proved to be inadequate, putting him in third position.
Instead of Pupo, it was Hall who proved to be the man of the hour. The Irish surfer did not get off to the best of starts, but a strong charge in the final minutes of the four-man battle allowed him to move to a heat-total of 14.30 points, thus grabbing
victory.
“It’s scary when you’re in the water and hearing scores go down and you knew everyone just took off on a good wave because it’s Trestles,” Hall said. “Every heat’s hard and obviously Pupo is amazing and Kai got his too.”
Barger also extended his life in the event after showing off his exquisite surfing skills to claim runner-up place through a heat-total of 13.94 points.
Parkes joined Pupo in the elimination list after finishing in fourth place with a two-wave total of 12.40 points.
