George Bailey, Australia’s T20 skipper, is extremely impressed by Glenn Maxwell’s performances in the recently concluded One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE) and hopes that the all-rounder will continue to deliver
the goods in the T20 format as well.
The 23-year-old cricketer from Victoria made his international debut in the on-going tour against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745 and played a couple of match-winning knocks against Pakistan, who possess some of the world’s best spinners.
In the last ODI at Sharjah, when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 were in trouble at one stage, Maxwell rose to the occasion and scored an unbeaten 56 off just 38 balls, with the help of four boundaries and three massive hits out of the park.
On top of that, the all-rounder is more than handy with the ball, although he failed to make a big impression in UAE because of the dew factor.
Maxwell has so far played just 11 first-class matches for Victoria but the selectors have shown faith on his abilities. Bailey revealed that he and the coach, Mickey Arthur, wanted him in the side because he is a genuine match-winner.
"Glenn was someone [coach] http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mickey-Arthur-c1969 and I pushed really hard for (at selection) just because of the X-factor and the versatility that he has," said Bailey.
With some of the new players coming into the T20 squad, the Aussie skipper is hopeful that they will bring energy to the side. Bailey understands that the three-match T20 series is going to be great preparation for the upcoming http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World T20 2012, which
is scheduled to commence in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 later this month.
"There'll be a nice injection of some energy and enthusiasm into the group. We'll try to find a settled lineup as quickly as possible, particularly with the batting. These will be really important games against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755," the middle-order batsman expressed.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Hafeez-c76898, has expressed that he is relying on teamwork, instead of individual brilliance.
"Ajmal is a world-class bowler but we are not depending on him alone," Hafeez told reporters. "I think other bowlers must support him from the other end."
The first T20 is going to be played today at Dubai.
