Australian great, Glenn McGrath, is all set to take over from compatriot, Dennis Lillee as the bowling consultant of the renowned MRF Pace Foundation.
Lillee had announced last month that this would be his last year after founding and serving the Chennai based organization for 25 years with distinction.
McGrath, along with former South African spearhead http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allan-Anthony-Donald-c43680 were initially shortlisted as strong contenders to lead the famous pace academy as its coaching director, but the latter was overlooked due to his commitment with the South African national
team.
McGrath on the other hand, had no other coaching obligation, which paved way for his selection. The job would fetch a hefty $200,000 per annum pay cheque for the legendary fast bowler.
Nicknamed as ‘Pigeon’, the 42-year-old is the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in the history of the game and is fourth in the all-time list of Test wicket-takers. Before retiring in 2006, the former spearhead played in 124 Tests, taking 563 scalps (at
21.64), and further stood in 250 ODIs, claiming 381 wickets (at 22.02).
"It's a great honour for me to work with the MRF Pace academy. I know it won't be possible to replace someone like the great http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dennis-Keith-Lillee-c53639. His legacy will be hard to live up to, but I will try my best in my role as the Director at the Foundation," the 42-year-old
said
The pace academy was established in 1987 in Chennai, on the campus of a Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. It was originally conceived to become a coaching clinic to train pace men from around the world, and later mentored India’s many new
ball bowlers.
Lillee said that it was a hard decision to make as he considers Chennai as his second home but asserted that McGrath is the best available choice and is hopeful that the academy would flourish under his guidance.
"McGrath is the perfect choice to carry the vision of the Foundation forward. I am happy for him and wish him all the best in his new role. I am certain that the MRF Pace academy will produce many more international fast bowlers under his guidance."
