http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glenn-Maitland-Turner-c60187 slams NZC’s new selection process – Cricket News Update
Glenn Turner, the former Kiwi skipper, has expressed grave concerns over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Cricket’s new selection system which he terms as experimental and incomplete. He has also dubbed the qualification criteria and job description for the New Selection Manager
(NSM) to be imperfect.
Turner, who served in the recently-revoked national selection panel for almost six years, also applied for the newly-created post of NSM but the NZC management, led by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Marshall-Buchanan-c68302, overlooked him and appointed an Australian, Kim Littlejohn.
Turner stated that he is not surprised at his rejection at all and feels quite satisfied for not being the part of the flawed system which does not fulfill the necessary requirements of the time.
The former captain’s major objection is on the job description advertised for the post of NSM. It required the NSM to be “responsible for establishing a comprehensive profiling system as players progress along the pathway of representing New Zealand, and
in doing so use a network of cricket coaches and key stakeholders."
Commenting on it, Turner said, “When I read the job description I felt that it did not cover what I believe is necessary to take full part in selecting and developing the Blackcaps [New Zealand]. The position appeared to be experimental.”
On rejection of his application, he told, "I needed to find out whether my skills would be used. They have been rejected, so we are probably better off without each other."
Buchanan’s revamped selection system is under fire from all sides as most of the former Kiwi players suggest that it is full of costly experiments and some even blame http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Buchanan-c48808 for showing cronyism by bringing in his countrymen in the cricket set-up of New
Zealand.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dion-Joseph-Nash-c54185, as ex-captain of the Black Caps, also stated a few days back that the NZC should not have put blind trust on Buchanan.
As per the new procedure, the NSM will work closely with the head coaches of all the cricket teams from top to bottom. The manager will be responsible for the selection and recruitment of players in the national team as well as in First-Class and List A
teams of both men and women.
Turner, who played 41 Tests and ODIs each during his international career, strongly believes that this strategy is not going to work.
