Glen’s Diamond shocks Top Trip to claim Qipco Yorkshire Cup - Horseracing news
Glen’s Diamond shocked Top Trip to claim the Qipco Yorkshire Cup (British Champions Series) (Group 2) at York in England on Friday, May 17, 2013.
No one would have been expecting this upset, as Glen’s Diamond was no way near his best throughout the previous season and this was his first ever outing in 2013. He was under immense pressure and the bookies had priced him 25 to 1, which clearly indicated that he would be unable to fight for the top five positions.
However, the five-year-old gelding proved that he possesses the potential to challenge his rivals at the highest level. Although the margin of his victory was not much, yet his fans would have been satisfied at the end of the day.
The Richard Fahey’s trained stallion got off to a good start, which gave him the confidence he require to finish on the top. He was in the lead pretty soon but the real challenge was to stay until the end, as the overall distance to cover was more than a mile.
Luckily for him, no one was able to gain a lead over him until the end and he succeeded by a nose distance. His jockey Tony Hamilton could not believe his luck after he saw the result of the race.
The season rider said, “I knew it was close but I didn't know I had won. He was keen in his races last year so I was left to it. I just jumped out and rested my hands on his neck and he pricked his ears in front. It's my biggest winner and I'm delighted it happened at York.”
On the other hand, trainer of the runner up stallion Francois Doume stated, “I'm never pleased when I get beat by a couple of inches. However, it was his biggest test and I'm still happy to find out we've have a good horse. It wasn't his ideal surface but he proven he's very well and that he stays.”
This was Top Trip’s second race of the ongoing season and he has been unable to succeed in any of them. His fans will be hoping that he breaks the shackles soon and starts winning races with consistency.
