Glens Melody shines in Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fillies Scheme EBF Mares Hurdle
Glens Melody surprised her opponents in the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fillies Scheme EBF Mares Hurdle (Grade 1) at Punchestown in Ireland on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Despite not being rated as the favourite to succeed, she displayed a splendid
speed and made her team proud.
The five-year-old filly was given a general starting price of 7 to 2 and she was not expected to finish on top of the table. Despite that, the punters did gamble some money in her and it paid off in the end.
Conditions were not easy for any runner, as there had been plenty of rain at the venue. Due to this, the ground became heavy, which meant that all of the runners had to put in some extra effort from the start until the end.
Although the track conditions brought in some difficulty for the challengers, yet it was an opportunity for some of them to come out of their shell and walk away with a cash prize of £50,406.50 in the end.
Glens Melody was unable to make an impressive start, but she did well to stay in the hunt. She displayed good speed, despite the testing conditions and managed to jump well too, which helped her gain positions with the passage of time.
Once she saw the opportunity, she quickened and took the lead over her rivals. From then onwards, it was pretty much clear that no one would be able to challenge her for the top spot in the end.
Her trainer Willie Mullins was really pleased with the outcome of the race and stated, “That was a nice surprise. She has improved all year. She's got stronger since Fairyhouse and showed a good turn of foot that I didn't think she had. I don't know where
she'll go next year. She's won a Grade 1 now and is a valuable commodity.”
He added, “Ruby wasn't keen to take on the leader on Tarla and I thought that she had enough Flat speed to be competitive.”
Overall, Glens Melody has participated in a total of 10 races, winning seven of them, which shows that she is fully capable of fighting at the front with consistency.
