  1. Well, I can't tell you the exact number, but I can tell you that every non-spayed female can have up to 5 LITTERS every year with up to 7 kittens in each litter.

The cat population is growing rapidly due to the sheer ignorance of humans. All it takes is a simple procedure to help stop the process. And if you volunteer at a cat rescue, you know just how hard it is with such an over population. Most shelters are full to the roof with cats and kittens. Foster homes are full of pregnant queens giving birth to more and more kittens.

Here is the time to start helping out your local animal shelters, whether it be money wise or simply volunteering your time doing whatever you can to lighten their loads. It takes so much money to run a shelter, not to mention finding ways to get everything that they need to take care of the animals.

My shelter in particular, because we are a no-kill cat rescue, is funded only by donations, annual fundraisers, merchandise sales and adoption fees and not by the government. They require the facility to euthanize any cat that is deemed unadoptable, which in most cases, the cat just needs a little extra TLC, which we provide. The cats there eat over 250 pounds of dry cat food, 1,000 cans of moist food and 120 pounds of special diet food every month. We also use of 700 pounds of litter per month. And we still manage to adopt out 300-500 cats per year.

So as you can see, shelters always need a bit of extra help. And if everyone would just start spaying and neutering, then we all would be better off.

  2. I'm not sure but in this year alone the rescue I foster for took in over 200 pregnant/nursing cats and kittens. I myself have fostered 16 this year.. and that's just a drop in the bucket.

I'd guess the cat population is in the billions.. with more added every day. Too many idiots letting their cats pop out kittens because it's "cute" gimme a break!

  3. WOW!  that is quite a question... why not do some research and tell us?

From all the peopel on this site who's cats are not spayed/ neutered and have 1 , 2, 3 litters... I would say it's in the billions.

So many people are under the mis advise that it is wrong to take away breeding (or s$x)  from cats is wrong... but they do not view it like humans.  Their ONLY purpose is to populate!

    Unfortunately IGNORANCE is rampant.

  4. I don't think anyone has a firm answer on that but here is a sight that discusses it and possible causes of the recent increases over the past years.
