Question:

Global Warming - Fact or Fiction 2?

I have read 21 answers with interest and make the following observations:

1. 'An Inconvenient Truth' was rebuffed almost in its entirety by Dr Stephen Hayward's lecture series.

2. There is no proof that global warming (gw) causes changes in weather patterns (hurricanes etc). We cannot predict the weather more than a week in advance.

3. Extinction - 99% of species going extinct are insects.

4. Definition of GW - techy but wrong. First and foremost, GW is a theory.

5. Disease - the Ebola and Hanta viruses were wrongly attributed to GW. This is hyped rubbish.

6. The Arctic is shrinking but the Antartic is growing. We have more ice now than 100 years ago. (Hence the 1970's ice age panic).

7. Of the 21 answers, there is a 50-50 split of opinion for or against GW.

I conclude there is no data to show CO2 rises in our atmosphere cause anything untoward. I believe GW is a fear tactic used by Western governments to keep the population in line. Somebody convince me otherwise!

  1. So when do libs or enviromentalist ever use FACT to support their cause? answer never so it does not matter to them in the long run.

  2. The planet goes through periods of weather change (Temp. change) naturally, currently they say we are going through period of warming but as you correctly pointed out at the same time the south pole is increasing??? so what is really happening...Hemmm may be the poles are shifting this would count for the north pole decreasing & the south increasign but the out come of this is more enormous than what we are pissing & moaning on here about, & it's not man made but nature at her finest.

The future of our civilization is at steak but it is not our doing if the poles do tilt the planet will go through major global changes, weather extreams, volcanoes erupting, & the planet will look a h**l of a lot different when it's finished but like I said it has nothing to do with "Al gores" BS. He is just riding a gravy train.

    "It's a fact acually,Here is some proves

    * the South and north pole has lost most of its ice s mass

    * the increase of no of hurcains

and there is too much at steak here"

What kind of steak? New York strip?

  4. fact.

first, let's keep in mind what you've asked for:

    "Somebody convince me otherwise!"

if you're honest, this would require you to pick the answer that best provides an indication that you are wrong, rather than one that says, "oh, you're so smart, you must be right."

    with that in mind,

<<1. 'An Inconvenient Truth' was rebuffed almost in its entirety by Dr Stephen Hayward's lecture series.>>

there are many people who want to deny AGW.  most specifically, the oil and coal industries.  which fund the American Enterprise Institute.  which pays folks to deny AGW.  http://www.exxonsecrets.org/html/personf...

<<2. There is no proof that global warming (gw) causes changes in weather patterns (hurricanes etc). We cannot predict the weather more than a week in advance.>>

climate and weather are not the same.  this is said over and over, and still people use it as a reason to question AGW.  the science clearly indicates that warmer waters cause more, and stronger hurricanes.  if you can find a reputible source that disputes this, please post it.

<<3. Extinction - 99% of species going extinct are insects.>>

okay.  and 99% of species are insects.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal

    "Mammals encompass approximately 5,400 species"

    http://www.enviroliteracy.org/article.ph...

"Current estimates of the total number of species on Earth range from 5 to 30 million"

so mammals comprise less than 0.1% of species.

<<4. Definition of GW - techy but wrong. First and foremost, GW is a theory.>>

yeah -- gravity is a theory too.  somehow, i don't hear nearly as many disputing, or attempting to dispute it.

<<5. Disease - the Ebola and Hanta viruses were wrongly attributed to GW. This is hyped rubbish.>>

no.  the EXPANSION of their environment is postulated as a likely result of global warming, not their existance.

<<6. The Arctic is shrinking but the Antartic is growing. We have more ice now than 100 years ago. (Hence the 1970's ice age panic).>>

    A) there was not a panic in the 70s.  oil and gas caused a panic.  water shortages caused a panic.  cooling did not cause a panic.  i was here.  i remember the first two.  cooling wasn't a national issue.

    B) there is not more ice today.  it's just not true.  keep in mind, Antarctica is a desert.  ice seems to be increasing on 1/2 of antarctica, slightly, while at the same time, it's decreasing on the other half.

<<7. Of the 21 answers, there is a 50-50 split of opinion for or against GW. >>

    A) the press, and deniers, like to use public opinion as if it were fact.  and at the same time, not count those that they don't like.

    B) with the tone of your question, it's hardly surprising that you don't get people arguing with you.  it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that you'll not listen to, or read, arguments you don't like.  why waste one's time.

if there's any chance you'll change your mind, you might read some of the following?

  5. Natural CO2 and temperature cycles generally manifest themselves over thousands of years.  How can people use this as an argument that we are in a natural warming period when we are currently undergoing rapid warming that correlates with anthropogenic release of CO2?

I mean just think...fossil fuels are old dead plants (mainly carbon) that have been stored in the earth for millions of years.  We are extracting them, burning them, and they are being released as gas at an alarming rate.

  6. I used to believe in manmade global warming until i really started looking at all the facts and statistics. if you listen to what al gore says you can sort out the fact from the fiction, such as his claim that polar bears are on the brink of extintion. It was warmer during the medieval warm period a 1000 years ago and polar bears were thiving and greenland was called greenland because a 1000 years ago it was lush and green. So no i don't even come close to believing in manmade global warming.

  7. Scam used to make money and spread fear.

  8. Global warming is real. we need to wake up and smell the pollution.

  9. Nothing to worry about

  10. Global Warming is definately a fact. The reason why its changes arent as apparent is there will soon be an ice age (soon for geologic time). Some scientists believe we might be able to get lucky and have global warming and an ice age balance out.

  11. The most inconvenient truth about global warming is that the government and many businesses stand to make a lot of money from it..an estimated $4500 per year for the average American family for MAYBE a couple tenths of a degree in temperature change and people in countries like Venezuela and China will not be paying any additional taxes.

Ice ages have come and gone many times in Earth's history and undoubtedly will come again. When it does, global warming will be the least of our concerns as New York is under a few thousand feet thick layer of the arctic ice sheet.

  12. It's a fact acually,Here is some proves

    * the South and north pole has lost most of its ice s mass

    * the increase of no of hurcains

and there is too much at steak here

  13. I think that you have it exactly right. CO2 may account for 1% of the current warming caused primarily by the Sun.

  14. your conclusion is correct, you go to the head of the class because you are smarter than a lot of scientists and a lot smarter than al gore

  15. Fact

  16. I lived in NYC for 65 yrs, which is long enough to notice a trend. The beaches didn't go back a foot despite  AGs 23 ft tide rise. A couple of years we has 13 snow storms in one winter. I remember Hempstead Bay frozen half way to the Throgs Neck Bridge. It's always about the poor animals getting extinct. Of course, we shoot them into extinction, or fish them extinct. Beside, the time is ripe; this administration thrives on fear.

  17. fiction

  18. fiction.

if you say something enough it makes it true. at least it seams that way.

  19. The proof is way too much for a Yahoo answer, it's in the links.

This is science and what counts is the data.

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)

    Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut

Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

    summarized at:

    http://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report...

There's a lot less controversy about this is the real world than there is on Yahoo answers:

    http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/a...

And vastly less controversy in the scientific community than you might guess from the few skeptics talked about here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_...

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/fu...

EVERY major scientific organization has issued an official statement that this is real, and mostly caused by us.  The National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Physics, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Association, etc.
