Question:

Global Warming - How fast is it?

Now, my understanding of global warming is this - that the decay of the ozone layer will cause unprotect UV rays to enter the Earth and melt the polar ice caps, causing a second ice age.

Will, with the recent chunks of the antartic breaking away and melting, one would think that the ozone layer is barely hanging in there! But, my thoughts were this - and mind you, this is from an uneducated mind for the mathematics behind scientific theory:

If the extreme heat from the raw rays hit the Earth, they would cause draughts. If the polar ice caps melt, wouldn't it just be filling up the waters that are being burned away? Why must the ice caps CONTINUE to melt afterwards? Wouldn't the freezing powers of the previously melted ice slow the process by re-freezing them? If it's cold enough to freeze the Earth, surely it can freeze the oceans too!

  1. here is a good set of  'starter' articles, explaining the physics of the greenhouse effect, and the current evidence for climate change;

    http://environment.newscientist.com/chan...

cfc's are a greenhouse gas too, its a good thing the montreal treaty curbed their use or we would be in even more of a fix now.

the antarctic ozone hole (and the winter thinning of the arctic ozone) might indeed have a small effect on the unexpectedly fast melting of the polar ice shelves and the acceleration of glacier movement in Greenland and Antarctica.

    you ask;

<Wouldn't the freezing powers of the previously melted ice slow the process by re-freezing them? >

are you talking about the latent heat used in melting the ice? as water is a very good transmitter of heat, i'm afraid the 'coolth'  doesn't hang around, the cool melt water is soon warmed by the surrounding water.

  2. It is not the warming! it is the times of the year that are moving. For example we got Snow now, while we had non for the december january and february.

  3. global warming mainly is due 2 greenhouse effect.

though the UV rays entering earth increases the temperature of atmosphere, but still it doesn't has much 2 do with global warming, these UV rays r harmful 2 us,causing many skin diseases.

as far as greenhouse effect is concerned, its due 2 gases like Carbon di-oxide,methane etc, which hav the characteristics 2 trap heat, this is why our the temperature doesn't fall suddenly after sun set.otherwise, after sunset,it would hav been like south pole everywhere.

but if the carbon di oxide content increases in the atmosphere due 2 pollution & burning of fossil fuels,it will absorb a lot of heat due 2 which the temp will rise rapidly, after a limit there won't b any more evaporation coz the humidity in the atmosphere increases & it becomes saturated.but the glaciers melt & the sea level rises.

but there r many more consequences of global warming.

  4. Kingbee is spot on. Global warming is the biggest political scam this century. Creates a lot of jobs, lots of tax revenue, The scientific data doe not collate with the dribble coming from these people. Biggest rip off to hit euozone and you are all paying the price no wonder most of the other countries are sratching their heads and asking why????

  5. The best scam ever ...Global warming ...

You now pay tax on this that and the other to protect global warming ........yet politicians still want bigger airports ,even the queen is in on it she has just opened terminal 5 at heathrow so even more planes can take off and land yet good old Ken is charging you even more to drive through London ,Politicians still fly ,when you have video and tv's .... Blimey I could go on all day with reasons its a con ....

    So dont believe the hype

  6. We have now had 10 years of cooling or stable temperatures.

    http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Mon...

The graph in this article shows that 1999 and 2000 were cooling years, 2000 to 2006 were stable and 2007 another cooling year.

These measurements were made by the official organisations that monitor global temperature, not GW sceptics or oil industry people, so they cannot just be dismissed. This has happened despite the continuing rise in CO2 levels, and indicates that the role of CO2 in our atmosphere has been substantially over estimated. It is a factor, but only one in many.

So the answer to your questions is, a lot slower than the global warming lobby would have you believe.

Throughout the 20th century we have had, roughly speaking, the first 3 decades of warming, the second 3 decades of cooling and the last 3 decades of warming again. The first decade of 21st century has been cooling. What will happen next? nobody really knows, certainly the computer models, which failed to predict this last decade of cooling, cannot be relied upon.

  7. You should be asking: Global warming! How real is it?

  8. global warming is just a big scam just don't worry about it.  Seriously that is one less thing to worry about and one less thing to cram my brain with.  I am a med student and could use the extra space.

  9. Droughts and extreme heat aren't the only concequences of global warming. And it's not really about the ozone decaying, it's because all the fossil fuels are staying in our atmosphere which takes the sun's rays that normally bounce back into space and keeps them in. That sentence was a bit confusing, sorry.

If the polar ice caps melt the salt water levels of the ocean would lower which makes the ocean tempature change. When ocean tempatures change the whole world's climate changes. So not only will it be really hot in some places, it will be really cold in other places and there will be more storms (hurricanes, tornados) and more droughts/floods.

A lot of habitats will be destroyed as will cities (Miami could be underwater).

I'm also not educated on the subject but I have read An Inconvenient Truth and seen the movie which I recemmend to everyone. So stop reading this and watch it.

  10. A lot quicker than the experts thought, that great chunk of ice breaking off is 10 times quicker than they thought.

  11. Global warming is a load of bull! The polar ice-caps melt and re-freeze every year. It's not unusual for big chunks of it to break away.

If you look at satellite images of the polar ice-caps, sped up over a period of time, you can see it happening. They grow and shrink every year.

  12. When I can see date-palms waving in the breeze in Hyde Park here in London, then I may believe in Global Warming.  Until that day, I will remain an unbeliever.

Look at it like this. A few months ago a cunning and crafty scientist told the world and his dog on TV here in UK that, "yes, we have global warming".  She then proceeded through a pseudo-science load of mumbo-jumbo to prove that global warming had started in the early 1800s as a result of the Industrial Revolution here in UK.

One of her pet theories related to the fact that the last Frost Fair held on the River Thames here in London was in c1814.

Well darling, this is a lie.  I have cartoon drawings of a Frost Fair on the Thames near London Bridge from 1830/1831.

If a so-called knowall pseudo-scientist can make a mistake of 17 years in her calculations, how many other mistakes has this evil witch made?

Global warming is a scam invented by the New Communists, otherwise known as the Greens.  Their plan it to turn the Island of Britain back to the Stone-Age by making it impossible for the Common People to keep warm in winter because of the new tax on everything, including breathing the air.

These same lunatics claim there is a water shortage here in London.  This is a lie and I have checked out a number of our massive reservoirs here in London and they are full to bursting.  These reservoirs do not rely upon rainfall in the immediate London area, but instead are fed by dozens of rivers and streets.

There are two rivers running through the area where I live.  Most of the time, especially in Winter/Spring, they are in full spate racing through at high speed.

    Water shortage, what water shortage?

These Greens and Deep Earth Goblins speak to an ignorant audience.  It is time to hear to alternative TRUTH to the constant banging on about Globular Warmington.  I'm sick of hearing about it.

Remember boys and girls, GREEN is the new COMMUNIST.  They want to impose new stealth taxes upon the people + one child per couple only.

SOUTH POLAR REGIONS - We learn yesterday 25 March 08 that a huge chunk of pack-ice the size of the Isle of Man has broken off the continent of Antarctica.  Big deal, so what?  It's summer down there, isn't it?  This means ice will melt and some of it will float free.  Anyone got film of that happening say in 1826?  How the h**l does anyone really know how much ice melted back then?  They don't.  It's all make believe.  To make matters worse, the scientists are lying to us.  Why?  Because unless they toe the UK.gov pack of lies line that Global Warming is happening, they will not get their UK.gov funding.

It's like this.  If any of us were a scientist, we'd be raving mad to deny Global Warming, because the moment we do that, our UK.gov funding will stop.  So guess what?  To h**l with the truth, let's keep to the 'party line' and go down the Global warming road.

    GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT HAPPENING.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IS CLIMATE CHANGE AND IT HAS d**n ALL TO DO WITH MAN'S PUNY EFFORTS EITHER.

One thousand years ago, the Vikings settled in Greenland, where there were verdant green pastures for their cattle and sheep.  Further west they also settled in Newfoundland - which they called Wineland because grapes grew there.

Are there any cattle and sheep ranches in Greenland today?

When did any of us drink a bottle of Newfoundland wine?

    You see.....and so it goes.
