Question:

Global Warming IS HAPPENING people vs. Global Warming IS A MYTH people?

I want some argument from both sides! Let it rip!!! Sorry, I'm a little hyper. I want some >>>>intelligent<<<< input from you people on both sides and someone counter-argue the second guy?

I also want to see how many skeptics there are here and how many aren't. A lot of the younger generation believe in Global Warming, what with the showing of An Inconvenient Truth at schools. Is it true that generally, more young people believe in Global Warming than adults? (30+ maybe?)

Read arguments below:

  1. Global warming is a scam. Al Gore deliberately lied in his movie lots of times, and the ilk of 'scientists' and lobbyists who now surround him are no better. They know the trough is flowing, and they all want to drink from it financially. Nothing has happened or is going to happen. People need to get their heads out of the sand and open their eyes! This rediculous thing is not just an 'Inconveinent Lie', but it's getting to be very manipulative in our lives and the expense will kill us. There has never been a scam like this...why praise its' creator Al Gore?

  2. To your Q about adults..30+ they think that is more important to make $$$ now and have a comfortable life before it starts. As for the 40+ and above they think it's going to happen after they are long gone. And for the young ones sorry it's going to fall on your shoulders if it's going to happen somewhere near in the future.

  3. I don't want to argue. It's exhausting. I will try to persuade and inform, however.

Yes, I believe that humans have accelerated natural cycles and have polluted our air and oceans to the point where it's becoming a serious concern for many reasons. But I don't feel compelled to argue, per se, because scientists and the majority of government leaders are "believers," too.

I think the fact that I have children and a young grandson do give me a perspective that many young people don't have. I also think there are skeptics and deniers in all demographics, though. Education is key. Those that chose to empower themselves by becoming informed through reliable sources will be able to become a part of the solution. And that feels a lot better than sticking your head in the sand and pretending it just ain't so.

  4. Lets face it-global warming is all about making money. As long as the wacko environmentalists keep crying, they're going to get government grants. Maybe the planet is warming up, but it has nothing to do with humans. It's a cycle that's been going on for millions of years-we heat up, we cool down, we heat back up again. When we came out of the last ice age 10,000 years ago, what made the planet warm up? Tahoe's and Hummer's? C02 is a good thing-that's what the planets inhale. The more CO2, the better the plants do; the better the plants do, the more oxygen they give off. But liberals can't be confused with the facts. They just start cussing and try to change the subject. It's funny (really it's sad)-liberals want cheap gas, but they don't want to drill for oil; they want cheap electricity, but they don't want to build any power plants. Liberalism truly is mental disorder.

Did you see the snow in Colorado on Friday? Was that caused by global warming? And China had it's coldest winter in over 100 years-more global warming? The problem with most 'sheeple' is they believe everything they hear on the alphabet news channels.

Dude #2 #6-wrong. A few decades ago they were saying we were going into another ice age.

  5. Then why is it colder in Germany and there burning coal is up 8% to keep warm

  6. I'll take on one of your arguments, Dude #1 says that the central premise of global warming is a lie because in past warmings the CO2 followed, rather than led, the warming. That's probably true, but it doesn't prove that the central premise is a lie, the central premise is that CO2 is a greenhouse gas and all things being equal if that is added to the atmosphere then the Earth will warm up. Ok, so in past warmings the Earth started warming first and the carbon dioxide followed. So what? As the Earth warms the ocean warms and the solubility of CO2 in the ocean goes down, so the ocean gives up carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, causing more warming. Just because A implies B doesn't mean that B can't also imply A. I honestly think Al Gore may have confused people on this issue, past warmings were not necessarily CAUSED by increased CO2 (after all, there were no people), but they still may have been exacerbated by the CO2 released from the ocean. It's a nonlinear effect.

  7. ok, so scientists know the globe is warming and generally agree that humans are the cause. People have said that scientists invented the idea just so they could get government grants, but this is not how the scientific community works. Scientists work to gain common knowledge for everyone rather than to monetarily benefit themselves. Skeptics generally have not read the vast amount of literature which describes the greenhouse effect and its link to global warming.

Also, for answering dude 1 reason 1, ive seen data displaying that principle once, but it was data from some crazy dude in Oregon whos life goal was to disprove global warming. Also, our planet may have been headed for an ice age a few decades ago because sulfur oxides (i think that what it was) were increasing the reflectivity of our atmosphere and allowing less sunlight to reach the surface.

now about Dude 1 reason 5, this only became a political agenda recently, it has been around in the scientific community for about 20 YEARS

  8. "They Called It . . .

The Year That Had No Summer

It was a bad year for getting outside. It was a really bad year for farming. It was 1816. For a long time, many Americans would tell wide-eyed descendants about "the year of no summer."

Farmers in some northern states never laid crops that year; by the time the ground thawed to a tillable degree, it was too late. Many farmers who planted, hoping for the best, went bankrupt—and when farmers fare poorly, town merchants and far-flung economic interests feel the sting.

Maine and Vermont were hit by a June snowstorm; the Midwest had snow in July and August. In one night, the temperature reportedly dropped 40 degrees in Georgia. Massachusetts residents shivered through eight nights of June frost. In lower states, moderated temperatures were coupled with otherwise weird meteorological conditions to spawn unprecedented, crop-slaying hailstorms.

The explanation? Historians attribute the bizarre North American summer of 1816 to an eruption of Mt. Timboro thousands of miles off in the East Indies. Particles of volcanic ash virtually clouded a broad band of the earth's atmosphere. It sent physical and financial shockwaves rolling across distant nations where few people had heard of Timboro.

This article from "Blithering Antiquity" shows how a volcanic eruption can cause the weather to change drastically over major parts of the world. We today think that the amount of polution we generate will cause greater destruction to the planet. Can somebody explain how that could occur? If the planet "fixed" itself after 1816, can it not also "fix" what little we put up today?

  9. This is coming from a 13 year old, so please listen. I have said this alot in the past 3 days and I mean it. It's really that global warming is happening. Hoew do you think polar bears are about to be gone forever due to the ice melting. Some people have no compassion and don't value the animals of life and it's pathetic. Penguins are becoming extict too! And it's all because of us, humans. Not all, but practically more than half of the people on Earth are probaly the cause to this. They don't know how to conserve and they don't understand that we can't always think technology is the answer.

  10. How about the 90% greenhouse gasses comming from nature itsself?

The fact is that the earth has went through at least one frigid time in the past and through at least 1 warming in the past. The proof is in the fossils for the warming. It could have been warmer with the earths atmosphere being under more pressure than we now have. FACT no one knowes for sure. And this would explain the tropical environment needed to support the dinosaurs and their food supply. Whether you believe in God or not, there is a whole lot of what goes on in the earth's environment that we will not understand and for sure will never be able to predict. Assuming we don't go stupid and push the nuke button.

I personally have a hard time believing man is responsible for 10% of the greenhouse gases. As this is only an estimate from someones model My model says well under 5% and Im a layperson.

If the estimates were given before the Montrial Protocal where we gave up the production of Refrigerant 12 and the clorene gas it contains to "save the O2" as to what the volcanoes and nature itself was doing about putting CO, CO2, and Compounds of Clorene in the air the estimates at that time 1995 I believe were in the 90% range but no one could research them because of the "supposed hole in the ozone layer over Anartica" Now we know the ozone hole or thickness opens and closes over time every year. Sometimes it closes more sometimes not.

But Our all wise and knowing EPA told us working with the clorene compound gas R12 "well we cant do anything about the volcanoes and the nature of the earth poluting the air, but we can do something about what we do to it".

Since I got this fine data from the experts at the EPA I figure its just another way for us to loose our freedom and "make us more equal" to the poorer countries. After all we cant do anything about nature. And if the models are off the other way the doo-gooders for the enviroment would be publishing the news so I figure its either 90% or a lot less and no one fighting for the enviorment wants to discuss this inteligently. They just want action not facts right or wrong just action. Keeping the profits out of the CORP's and crippeling the ecconomy of the industrialized world.

I have heard of Carbon Cards in Great Brittan. Once you've used your share of carbon credits I dont know what you do, you sit home I guess. I suppose it might be easier for terrorists to hit you if you cant move. And most of them are from developing or 3rd world countries where they can depend on like minded people to take care of the family they leave behind.

Now if you want to believe what "experts say" and deduct fudge factors from their equasion, then factor back in the truth, 95% sounds closser than 90%.

If this is really a man caused problem and if their really is a problem man can correct, the developing countries will take up any slack that the industrialized nations give. Thus no effect.

  11. OK-- first absolutely NOTHING bad has happened yet-- not one person or animal has died from (supposed) GW. The temperature has risen less than 1/2 of ONE degree.

The data is not long enough or good enough (especially ground temperature data)-- to rely on. Now give me another 20 years of Satellite data showing a 35-40 year trend and I will change my opinion.

The Earth is presently in a cooling trend --- which scientists have said will last for 1 or 2 decades!

Antarctic ice is increasing to the largest "shelf" ever recorded. Arctic ice has refrozen (ocean ice) back to "normal" levels -- the data on Arctic ice is very short term and does not go back very far.

None of the oceans have risen more than a few millimeters--- and have been rising since the last ice age.

The computer models have numerous variables many of which a good guesses and nothing more. They cannot predict the temperature for the next 2 years much less the next 100 years.

The debate on CO2 centers around CAUSE or EFFECT-- some scientists say man is causing an increase-- while others say the slightly rising temps RELEASE more Co2 into the atmosphere from the oceans--- an effect of the higher temps not a cause of the temp increase.

Just follow the money on carbon credits --- and educational grant money, to discover why this has become a POLITICAL issue, more than a scientific theory discussion.

  12. its a myth. have you heard of the ice age? and before that? it was hot. the earth is going in what we call a cycle.

  13. ok look its real its caused by people and it dont mean the earth is just guna get hotter or become tropical it mean extreme climate, we could have a new ice age (cold water from melting ice messes with an ocean cycle i dont fully understand), a planet of desert and acidic seas (desert if u dont get ur stupid but warm water may dissolve rocks in the sea that when mixed with water will make an acidic solution) , an explosion that destroys earth (warm waters free a once frozen gas called methane aka f**t which is very flammable. no clue how it got there but it is being released right now form lakes as seas and it also contributes to global warming i did a report on it, i got an A not an A= cuz i made so many spelling mistakes im guna get that on my pro some how!

  14. I just want to point out, YA is not representative of the rest of the country or world when it comes to global warming opinions.

  15. An adult here! First, I challenge anyone on here to honestly say they can comprehend a 1 MILLION YEAR time period, let alone 1 BILLION! Yes the Earth we live on is in fact almost 6 BILLION YEARS Old people! So it is laughable from someone who has any knowledge of science, to hear young and old people alike who profess to be experts on climate change. The truth is, our small human minds dont have that much of an idea on where the Earth is heading.

    This may help however.

Ian Plimer is a skeptic of human induced climate change, and blames volcanoes for increased global warming. I tend to agree, however Im sure man will one day find a way to make himself extinct like the dinosaurs, if the environment does not do it first. It will take a good many millions of years though most likely.

  16. There is currently no evidence that man has made any significant contribution to climate change.

    Some interesting facts.

    1. During most of the past 2,000 years, the temp has been about the same or higher. Currently, we are barely over the average for the last 2,000 years.

    2. During the medieval warm period (820 – 1040 AD), Greenland supported farming. Those areas previously farmed are now covered in glaciers. Obviously the melting and reformation of glaciers is a cyclical occurrence.

    3. The earth experienced a little ice age which ended around the late 1860's or so. This is about the time man started recording temperatures. This would be like measuring a lake depth after a severe drought, then worrying about it flooding as it rose to normal levels.

    4. The earth has been warming for the last 10,000 years, since the last major glacier time period. Also, for most of the last 1 billion years, the earth had NO glaciers or ice coverage.

    5. The AGW theory states that CO2 is the primary driver of temperature. They arrived at this idea because they did not know of anything else which could cause it. But during the 70's and during the current decade, temperatures dropped while CO2 continued to rise. This means that natural occurrences are driving temp, not CO2.

    6. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation and sun spots provides a much better correlation to earths' temperature than CO2 levels ever have.

    7. Polar Bears are experiencing a population boom. Coke sales in the arctics are through the roof. Polar Bears have been around for thousands of years, and remember, we are only at the average for the last 2,000 years. They lived through all the previously warmer climates.

    8. The glaciers have been melting now for over 10,000 years. the current rate of melting is similar to previous melting.

    9. There is no consensus on AGW. This was a lie that has been propagated by the media.

    10. Yes we emit CO2 into the atmosphere and it is a greenhouse gas, but, we only contribute about .28% of all the greenhouse effect. Water vapor makes up about 95% of the greenhouse effect. CO2 and other trace gases round out the greenhouse gases at about 5% for all of them. Of that 5%, only 3% is CO2, and most of that is natural. Again, our contribution to the greenhouse effect is a paltry .28%

    11. The spread of disease is not attributed mainly to temperature. If this were the case, Florida would be a giant festering disease ridden cesspool. Economic standing is the primary determining factor in the spread of disease. Poor cultures can not fight the disease or eradicate the pests like more successful nations.

    12. Natural climate disasters (hurricanes, cyclones, etc) have never been scientifically linked to global warming (whether natural or man made).

    http://www.nationalpost.com/story.html?i...

  17. There is no ABSOLUTE proof of the warming as these cycles have happened way before industrialization. However, we will see many more violent storms and major earthquakes because our earth is still shrinking. These were even predicted by Christ, when He said these things would happen after Israel established their modern Nation. It is not a criticism of them, by Him, but to show the times! Over 90% of greenhouse gas is from nature and not from man! Active vulcanoes and major plate shifts release billions of cubic feet of greenhouse gas. Obviously, Al did not mention these! If he did, it would not be such a subject, would it? Just looking into the facts taken by vulcanologists shows the volume and qualitative analysis of these shows how much and what kind of gas is being released! Take and average and multiply by the known numbers of active vulcanoes! You get the answer that shows the over 90% and even higher.. if one looks at the undersea vulcanoes. Earl

  18. I didn't read the whole thing but global warming is happening it's gonna kill the polar bears

  19. I am an older person who feels certain that global warming is occurring . Just take a walk outside in the city -- where not only black top streets and buildings reflect heat but the very air is hotter from carbon based fuel . Now take a walk out in the country further away from constant traffic , even with out shade from trees the air is cleaner (not so many particles to heat up from the sun) . This goes for a humid climate as well. Mean while we have these (excuse me for saying it this way) Educated idiots sitting in their Ivory Towers - debating once again what should be noticed naturally.
