Or saying that if we are going at the same rate we are now, soon there will be global warming and when the icebergs melt, most of the coastal lands will flood?

  1. Environmentally conscious at 11? That's pretty awesome.

Take it from me, you are not going overboard. Far from it. But I don't want to bub you out. The only thing I can say is, that there are alot of things that you and the people you know can do to make a positive impact that aren't as complicated and expensive as buying a hybrid car.

Have you ever gotten clothes from a thrift store or vintage shop? Totally eco-friendly.

Do you drink soda? It's unhealthy for you, and not particularly great for the environment.

Have you ever planted a garden? Why not give it a try and impress your friends and family with your ability to grow your own veggies.

Do you eat out at fast food restaurants alot? I know they're fun, but the food is terrible for your health, and making it is very harmful to the planet.

Do you take the bus, ride your bike, or walk to school? If you do, that's awesome! Keep up the good work! If you're parents drive you, ask them why? If there is a bus, or it is safe to walk or bike, you should be doing that. Exercise is healthy, and walking is better than driving.

How often do you watch TV, and how often do you read or do other activities for fun? Reading is a great way to learn about new ways to improve your life, your community, and the planet. Plus, it makes you smarter! Watching too much TV not only isn't great for you, but it also uses alot of electricity.

I hope that these tips have been helpful, and that you keep up the good work of caring for the environment.

  2. that's great!!  of course we should all be driving hybrids or other cars that use less fossil fuels.  we should be carpooling and taking public transportation too.  we should turn off lights, use compact fluorescent bulbs, unplug items not in use, develop solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, the list goes on and on.

promoting environmentally-conscious ideas is great.  try not to condemn or preach.  but spread the word!!

  3. Congrats, your a freak. You have been brainwashed by the  school you attend, the main stream media.Your only 11 forget about that stuff and go out be a kid and have fun.

  4. Congratulations on being concerned about the environment at such a young age.

While we shouldn't force people to drive hybrids, it really would be a good idea if more did.  That would use less gas and result in less greenhouse gases.

Icebergs melting doesn't raise the sea level (since they are already a part of the sea).  We have to worry more about huge glaciers on land (like Greenland) melting.  As they melt, that will raise the sea-level.

Luckily, the rise in sea level if slow (only about 3 mm each year), so we have time to respond to that.

  5. You sound very mature for 11.

Hybrids are great.  I was going to trade in my family car for a Prius but then fell in love with the Mini Cooper.  I'm hoping they put out a hybrid soon. But I've driven in friends' hybrid cars, and they love them, too.

It's almost a certainty that the world will change the way they do business, because, basically, we already have started the process.  There's a lot of research, and at your age you're not too young to think about climatology or a related field, so you can help to be part of the solution.

I have a lot of great informational sites, but will share a few of the  sites that inspire me.  By being informed, and inspired, we are empowered, and we will rise above this crisis to work together and forge solutions.  Only then can we ensure that you and your children can have a bright future on what I've found to be an awesome planet.

  6. first, congratulations.

flooding will be a slow process, particularly in the US.

i think that in general, the only areas likely to be in serious difficulty are around the gulf coast, particularly the everglades, and places around Louisiana.

i don't care whether a car is a hybrid -- only that it not waste gas.

at the moment, hybrids are the best option.

but not all hybrids, only those that get reasonably good mileage.

frankly, a hybrid SUV makes me ill.

the recent increase in gas prices will do more to raise awareness than all the politicians combined.

there'll be howls to reduces taxes, and stop the US government from buying and storing oil, but even those efforts won't make a serious difference.

people that currently own SUVs today, won't be able to give them away in a very few years.

anyone who buys an SUV today just isn't thinking.

as soon as they drive it off the lot, it looses $10,000 - $20,000 of it's value.

i'll have to go look at lease rates for 'em.

on one hand, considering the expected value in 2-3-4 years, the lease rates should have gone up dramatically.

on the other hand, with nobody buying them, car companies should be praying that they find someone dumb enough to lease one.

  7. You should be interested in reducing the amount of fossil fuels we burn, even if not in promoting a particular solution like hybrid cars.

But it may not be possible to stop global warming even if we stop causing global warming. That is because global warming has happened many times in the past, without our assistance. When global warming progresses to a given level, the earth Will have greatly reduced cloud cover, because of the elevated temperatures. We sill have a lot more water vapor in the air, but the higher temperature will resist cloud formation. That drives global warming on until abruptly some event causes a bit of cooling, at which point we move from global warming to global cooling, and the start of a new ice age.

The new ice age is dependent on having that period of warm cloudless skies for hundreds of years, warming the oceans. Only when the oceans are warmed will they support evaporation enough to move giga tonnes of water into glaciers over the land.

It is the global warming that heats up the oceans enough to drive an ice age that  in the long term matters most.

A major ice age will take water off coastal areas, giving more land, but it will cover vast areas in deep ice.  The ice age is  more to be feared than the warming period in terms of loss of life.

But I expect humanity will survive through both, even if billions die.
