Global warming,is this a serious threat?

i was at work yesterday,and the topic was global warming,some feel global warming is not a threat to the world,and others say it is,i think it has alot to do with the recent floodings,and hurricanes,all those horrible storms,i am just wondering what do you think about global warming?

Put quite simply the answer is yes, the planet is heating up. What is most alarming is the rate at which the average temperature is rising.

Hurricanes do seem to go in cycles where they get stronger (on average) and then weaker. What you have probably overheard is the theory, not that there will be more hurricanes but that the ones that do form will be more powerful. This is based on the rising temperatures of surface water in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. When a hurricane forms it begins to move. If it moves over cooler water it begins to weaken, just as it does when it makes landfall. But if it finds warm water, such as Katrina did, it can build up in intensity very quickly. Katrina went from a borderline category 1-2 storm to a category 5 storm in less than 24 hours.

Global warming is a threat to some areas but holds promise for others. If one owns property along the shore that is less than a meter above sea level or where access is less than a meter above sea level, there is a serious threat. Check with the National Weather Service, the Smithsonian and other sources to see what might become flooded.

On the other hand people in Chicago may never have to shovel snow for another thousand years. Much of northern Canada, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Russia might be opened up to farming.

What is obvious is that rising sea levels brought about by global warming will result in major population movement. We are beginning to see this already as several islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have already been evacuated.

The slight global warming should not be worried about. What people should be worried about is the manipulation of data in Gore's movie to scare people.

First - the amount of man made activities contribute to warming is but a slice of the warming trend (which may not be the trend anymore considering the cold winter this year in North America and China)

Second - And even more important reducing the C02 created  by man will cost the same amount  as national budgets for large countries every year, for years. Companies will go bankrupt, people will lose their jobs, economies will fail.  - OK there is some scare mongering a little closer to reality .  . . .

i think its another way to rip you of, they don't know what is happening, a few years ago they said all these small islands would be under water,and the see was rising , you listen to the weather reports in these flood areas and they say the worse floods in 50 years , or the heat ,the hottest since 1940, so all these thing have happened before, in my opinion its a cycle of the earth and will soon be going the other way and be colder , and they will still come up with a disaster reason for it

global warming is not a threat. it's happened before, it has to happen again. people survived it before, people will survive it again. there's nothing to we can do to stop it, as most of global warming's driving force is all natural, not man-made problems. for instance, methane gas (released from cows and such) has a greater affect on global warming than do cars and other man-made pollutants. cows have been around for quite awhile, much longer than cars.

Global warming is real. Watch An Inconvenient Truth. The idiots who posted on here saying that it is BS are wrong. Unless the entire scientific community (with the exception of a couple oil company scientists) are lying to us, GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL. i think global warming is a really serious problem which is causing a lot of problems all over the world now. countries which are not suppose to experience snow or sun are getting it and places which are cold are now warm and natural disasters are happening more often nowadays.

Global Warming is true, there are Natural fazes but we are affecting that to a great extent ,with deforestation ,desertification and pollution., especially air pollution.

And it is more than a threat many people have died already because of it.

A few weeks ago one of NASA's top scientists concluded that the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free within five years, much faster than all previous predictions.

Calculations do not include the accumulative ,speeding up ,factor with time. the increase in water temperature will get faster all the time as well as the melting, when the ice is all gone the deeper cold Ocean currents will stop ,and the drag has gone with it ,also changing the higher warm currents,And only the moon will keep things moving

This will affect coastal climates ,world wide ,almost instantly. All aquatic flora and fauna will be affected,many dying off and others becoming invasive,

And recently In Chiapas ,and Tabasco in Mexico .more then a million people became homeless overnight with water coming up to their roofs ,because of rains from super evaporation from the forests,this had never happened before. Millions of animals died.

In India 3000 people died because of super storms .

.A few years ago in Europe 3500 people,died during a heat wave ,many of them in France .

Right now the average death toll annually is 150.000 due to Global warming

. these figures are already out of date and are expected to double soon.

In Northern China millions of people are running for their lives because regular dust storms so far have buried 900 villages under the sand and the whole of northern China is turning into a dessert.

The Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year all around the edges ,like a slow burning fire shriveling up their neighbors In the Kalahari huge rivers have dried up and thousand of species are gone due to their habitats disappearing .

The biggest changes are invisible at micro biotic levels species are becoming extinct ,others are multiplying ,

This affects the insect populations that follow ,and changes in that ,affect all that follows in the food chains ,

All life is interrelated of both flora and fauna, And since we are on the top of the food chain ,

we are always the last to know.

So Global warming has its toll there are incidents all over the world ,

However

confusion rules the day ,i am beginning to think that SCIENCE HAS BEEN INVADED WITH POLITICS AND HUMAN EMOTIONS

The truth is being distorted at high levels,

And lies have been weaved in.

Some of the real dangers are being hidden because there are no solutions , Public could panic.and Authorities would loose control .

Besides Corporations have other priorities and changes will cause loss of profits ,this also affects the truths being published

Others facts are exaggerated so that the phenomena can be used to milk the people.

This is further complicated with Arrogance that will not admit that mankind could be guilty, or that Gods could be out of control ,unloving or incompetent

But I do not think we can make a real difference anymore to change the tide.

On a Global scale,Humanity is not co operative enough .

The poor regions have other priorities such as daily survival.

There is a lot we can do about being more responsible with what we got ,

In the first world countries many do not care or are more interested in Global Control than Global Warming.

It is not a problem to you since you have access to a computer and probably live in a developed country which has enough technology and finances to adapt (at least partly).

For the weaker people such as in the least developed countries, the picture looks darker with ultimately an increased poverty, diseases and starvation.

People now habitat more locations and new weather radar is able to track weather that used to go un noticed.  One of the other posters noted more Level 5 hurricanes during 1920 - 1950 period than  time period where data exists. So no, 'global warming' locally or globally is not something to worry about. Be concerned about the weather that is likely going to happen to you locally.

Because when we pollute the air , they form greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are formed by carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is formed by everything we do. Anway, greenhouse gases trap the sun's rays, so heat is kept in the atmosphere, which eventually will cause the polar icecaps to melt, arctic animals will become extinct, eventually more animals will become extinct and the sea levels will rise so much the entire earth will be flooded.

So yes, basically it's a big threat.
