Question:

Global warming a hoax?

What do you think about global warming? Personally, I believe that the earth could easily be warming up, we did have an ice age before so why couldn't the opposite happen. But where I disagree is that we can do anything about it. I think we're just flattering ourselves really. I mean even with 7 billion people there is still enough land to hold 500 times that amount and our emmesions or whatever are so insignificant we're just kidding ourselves. That's my thought on the matter what's yours?

  1. Nobody really knows.  There is some evidence that the earth is warming; glaciers have been retreating for some time.  There is solid evidence that the atmospheric level of CO2 has increased by about 10% over the last forty years.  Whether these effects are related, and if so which is the cause, is pure speculation: there isn't any evidence, and can't be, as controlled experiments are obviously impossible.  All of the present noise is based on computer simulations of mathematical models, and if you have ever tried to use such to forecast the weather, you are entirely too well aware of the deficiencies of this.  There is no reason to believe that anything that humanity can do will have any significant effect on CO2 levels anytime soon -- the cost is just too large.  For more on this, see:

  2. No it's not a hoax. People who want to sell big cars or in certain other businesses try and tell people it's a hoax because they're greedy and selfish.

  3. okay um dankush is a psychopath. lol

but i dont think global warming (whether hoax or not) is something we need to worry about.

i'd explain it all but i dont have the time nor space in the text box.

  4. Global Warming is not a Doomsday Prophesy it is a wake up call.

The first thing we need to do is help make some changes in our

national mind set from one that lets us believe that our earth can

recover from anything, to one that lets us believe that our earth

    could use a little help.

Developing cleaner ways to produce electricity is not going to hurt a

thing, if it doe's nothing but make the air we breathe cleaner it

    works for me.

Developing alternative fuels to power our transportation needs ,

again won't hurt a thing, reduce the demand for oil you reduce the

price we pay for it, I think everyone can say "that works for me" to

    this.

In our everyday life's one of best ways to help focus your mind

set in the right direction is to say to yourself each

morning, "Today I will do no harm to the earth" I do this it works, I

find myself doing little things that in the long run enriches my

life, again it don't hurt a thing.

I could go on about this all day but I won't. I'm a global warming

advocate but, not because of some unfounded fear of Doomsday but (as

you may have guessed by now) because it won't hurt a thing to help

our earth recover from years of industrial plunder.

  5. Global warming is a cover up for whats coming in 2012, which is the end of the the human race, well at least the majority of it. The world will greatly change in the coming years, the earth is doing a cleansing of itself, it is cleansing itself of toxins, ie. pollution, it needs this for its own survival. The earth is an organism just like us, and its tired of our bullshit. Believe it or not, you and everypne you love will parish, it will be a new beginning for anybody who survives. there is scientific evidence that backs this theory, you should believe it, because it is very real.

  6. Global Warming is not a hoax.  Global Warming is occurring, and will eventually result in Abrupt Climate Change to cold. The Gulf Stream which carries warmth from the tropics to North America and western Europe is being diluted by rapidly melting ice caps. Its salinity keeps it moving, but the dilution may shut it down, possibly bringing on another Ice Age or another "Little Ice Age" like the one just a few hundred years ago which caused widespread famine.

Ignoring or downplaying the probability of abrupt climate change could prove costly. Ecosystems, economies, and societies can adapt more easily to gradual, anticipated changes. Some current policies and practices may be ill-advised and may prove inadequate in a world of rapid and unforeseen climate change. The challenge to world leaders is to reduce vulnerabilities by enhancing society’s ability to monitor, plan for, and adapt to rapid change.

All human endeavor hinges on the vicissitudes of climate. Thus, the potential for abrupt climate change should prompt us to re-examine possible impacts on many climate-affected sectors. They include: agriculture; water resources; energy resources; forest and timber management; fisheries; coastal land management; transportation; insurance; recreation and tourism; disaster relief; and public health (associated with climate-related, vector-borne diseases such as malaria and cholera).

Until recently, conflicting results have meant estimates of ice loss at the poles vary widely. Now an international team has used satellite data and climate modelling to show that, in the decade ending in 2006, annual ice loss from West Antarctica increased by 59 per cent while losses from the Antarctic Peninsula leapt by 140 per cent (Nature Geoscience, DOI: 10.1038/ngeo102). These results tie in nicely with recent results obtained by other methods, bringing consensus over ice loss a bit closer.

Also this week, a separate team used glacier and meteorological data in Greenland to show that local warming since 1990 has resulted in the most severe melting in 50 years (Journal of Climate, DOI: 10.1175/2007JCLI1964.1

There may be enough land to hold many times the population we now have, but that takes up cropland and destroys rainforests that produce the oxygen we breathe.  It means that we move into areas where people haven't lived before, and catch new diseases that we have no antibodies against.

You say there is nothing we can do.  To me, that means you don't care to make the effort to keep a habitable world for our children and grandchildren.  We can and must stop pollution, slow population growth, find and use renewable energy sources, recycle everything we can, cut power usage and water usage, stop destruction of rainforests, buy products made from recycled components.
