Global warming and its effect on the ocean.?

I am writing a paper for school on global warming's effect on the ocean. Do you know any good websites or even just facts that can be proven about global warming and its effect on the ocean?

  1. Global warming is causing the ocean sea level to rise and making the ocean warmer which is killing the coral reefs and temperature sensitive fish.

  2. OK I KNOW PICK ME PICK ME I KNOW!!! I f**t a lot and contribute about 99% of the greenhouse gasses. The rest is from my chirpractor

  3. as you know the ice is melting.  Ice is fresh water.  That will lower the salinity of the salt water, killing some fish species.  Warmer water also will drive fish either polar because they cannot survive in warm waters, but the food that they feed on does not necessarily precede them so the fish will not multiply as greatly as before.   As the water warms up, the planet warms up(as it takes alot to warm up the water--and so too the same can be said for cooling down.

  4. Did your teacher tell you to write about GW effects on Oceans?

Do you (or your teacher) know about the effects of El Nino & La Nina?

The Oceans DRIVE Weather & Climate! Not the other way around.

    What scientists can't explain today:

    http://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov/satellite...

A Great amount of Ocean Heat on the 'Pacific Ring of Fire' and near the Mariana's Trench. This is enough heat to OutGas more CO2 from the ocean than man could Ever Dream of Creating!

  5. acidification. carbon dioxide makes a weak acid in water. as the oceans absorb more co2, they get less salty. eventually coral and other small creatures that make shells will not be able to.

edit; Andrew, acidification is the term for the process, it doesn't mean the sea will be acid as in a ph of under 7 dur!

and it is incontrovertible that it is happening, it is measurable, and obviously caused by the measured increase of co2 in the atmosphere

  6. Global warming is a hoax so it can't any effect on an ocean.  You might want to pick a different subject at least until there is some actual warming.  Most people are tired of hearing about it so you might get a bad grade.

  7. I think a more appropriate term is climate change. Carbon cycling. The ocean is the largest absorber (also known as "sink") for CO2. As we emit more CO2 the ocean absorbs more of it (see le chatalier's principle in any chemistry text). Many processes that are both biological (e.g. photosynthesis of algae, algae die the carbon from their biomass gets deposited at bottom of ocean) and abiotic (e.g. carbonate speciation CO2 in water makes H2CO3 and that is involved in buffering) are involved in this. The acidification mentioned above is an extreme case and has not been researched near enough to be considered possible. But what is happening is increased burial of organic carbon and in some cases massive algal blooms. Also, if the arctic and antarctic ice is melting as some say it is, then the ocean's salinity can decrease. This causes problems for some sensitive ecosystems like coral reefs but also plays a role in ocean currents (the saltier the water the more dense it is, if the bottom currents which partly drive earth's climate are diluted then its possible that they will slow or shift direction). So then the question is, can the oceans actually compensate for CO2 emitted by us. Some say yes and some say no, but in any case all the effects of climate change will certainly not be known for a long time. If you have any more questions let me know!

    Cheers,

    Andrew

  8. Well I'm not exactly sure but we do know that due to the ice melting the ocean level is rising, and it makes it easier to flood low leveled islands.

  9. Absolutely no facts to prove it otherwise it wouldn't still be a theory. Plenty of opinions though so just read on and just use all the opinions of pro- AGW people on yahoo for your paper, I think most teachers would love it as it will fit most of their political ideologies and that of the teachers union as well.
