Question:

Global warming and surf.?

I've heard that global warming is supposed to be increasing surf, and improving conditions everywhere. In the last few years the surf seems to be getting noticeably worse. Has anyone else noticed this? And is the whole global warming thing making surf better completely incorrect.

  1. Pretty much, the water level is going to rise (as is the temperature). This means that in certain places, there will be more reef. There will also be breaks that exist now which won't break that much anymore except on the heaviest of days, because the water level is simply too high. I went to Bali about 4 years ago, and again this year. And some of the waves just aren't there anymore. But there's also new reef growth, it looks like things are growing, and some places that didn't work before which are now solid point breaks. So yes, some of the classic waves aren't going to exist anymore, but there's also gonna be a ton of new waves, which will be sick. So does this mean you should buy land in Indiana, hoping for beachfront property someday? Probably not. But you should expect to see some gnarly waves emerging.

  2. global warming could possibly produce stronger, more severe hurricanes during the summer due to the warmer water temperature.  as everyone knows surf is formed by wind traveling over water, the more wind, the bigger the waves. the stronger storms also destroy more property and shoreline when they eventually make landfall.

  3. My beachfront property in Alaska is doing just fine.

    Gonna plant some palm trees.

  4. surf.................................

  5. That would be true, if you happen to believe that we are undergoing global warming. Climatologists are constantly debunking all of the global warming theories, but what they say isn't very sensational, so it really doesn't get a lot of press coverage. This was the coldest, snowiest winter in the US since the '60s. Large portions of the polar ice caps are re-freezing.

However, we should not disregard the environmental harm caused by greenhouse gasses. While the they are not rushing the world to an end, they aren't helping matters. Alternate fuels, and "greener" living are needed to keep this planet in the best of health for surfers and other people.

By the way, if there was major global warming, it would disrupt the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, and it would COLD surfing all the way down to the Bahamas. Also, only a few feet higher, and the new sea level would make Philadelphia and Baltimore shore resorts. (slight exaggeration). Robbinsmv is right about wind making waves, but with a colder Atlantic, Huirricanes would become rarer, not more frequent.

  6. ocean water can increase tempreture of as much as 15 degrees in the summer which could cause bigger waves
